I was truly shocked that Big Jim did't decide we were going to betray him and try to end us. They were really setting him up as violent and paranoid. I thought he might even go after my daughter given the last mission.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone talking about the difference between the "Big Jim" shown on the news report and the "Big Jim" from the conspiracy board. Considering the game's roadmap, I'm not sure we've seen the last of him.

But story wise, it's likely not them, but an obvious coverup for Big Jim's alias of course

I really hope they won't go for the "and then he killed you, your daughter the dog and a random old lady as well because you got involved and he is eeeevil, you feel sad yet?" route with the extra maps.
The thing with Tyler was already very predictable and cliche, it didn't even felt like a twist, just a mandatory trope we have to get over with.
I think the game works way better when it leans into the dark humor and grin-and-bear-it attitude with Kovalsky

I think the game's story is meant to suggest that Big Jim had trust in Kovalsky because the latter was so focused on helping his daughter. He also doesn't have any other ties to the criminal underworld. Tyler was killed because his girlfriend and the friends she invited over to the house were all ex-Nomads; and Jim already had several run ins with that gang trying to kill him.

I'm pretty sure it's not the first time it's happening. Maybe he paid someone to go in prison in his place. Can't see Jimmy being caught this easily.

it's definitely a scapegoat. big jim needs an alibi so he can go on vacation/move like he said at the end of the last mission in the office. kovalsky looks at a board filled with pictures of different countries, maybe hinting that act 2 involves both of them overseas? maybe
