Mission count is slightly lacking from your average edf also (again likly spent more time making it look nice)
For instance, the easy one to spot is a rocket launcher that does 7777 damage but has "Accuracy: Z" which literally shoots in any direction.
A less easy to spot one is a really powerful looking shotgun, all the straight up stats look fine.
But it does 0 damage if you shoot enemies directly with it... You have to shoot the GROUND for it to EXPLODE in a tiny radius to deal damage.
Chain guns have no rating on how much you can move or aim with them while revving. "Improved performance" is still absolutely unusable, so thats an entire class of weapon completely worthless.
All swords can be used like 1-5 times before RELOADING THEM for 3 seconds save for one that Ive found so far.
I already quit this game way back because of how unplayable the game was but my nephew wanted to play another EDF game and I've milked edf 5 for all its worth so I'm back on this.
The biggest problem is the level design. Difficulty is all over the place and you can literally never tell how hard a mission will be. They range in difficulty from start to finish too. The first level is harder than some of the later levels I've played. Somewhere in the 15-20s there's one with so many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ robots you cant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ move. And the hit stumble in this game will happen from almost ANYTHING. which is complete garbage because so many guns require build up, charge, something. And you lose ALL of the progress on that if something too big steps too close to you.
So many levels I've just been stun locked to death from like 10 seconds into the mission. EVerything instantly aggros onto you and you get bum rushed from the first second.
That being said now that I've passed some of the early game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ missions i've had some moments of enjoyment on the more tame ones. There's literally a difficulty wall to get past early game until you find some slightly more usable weapons that are still 100% gimmicks. like my 60 second reload laser cannon. At least it's usable. I can charge it to shoot more bombs or just tap it to obliterate in a single AoE in front of me. I use that and a 20 ammo 0.5 second reload sword to deal with the dog piling.
Too bad there's so few USABLE NORMAL guns in this game. And using normal guns is so insanely weak you cant get by on using "shotgun" or "machine gun" you have to use like these stupid lasers machine guns that build up over time but if enemies get too close to you you hurt yourself and stumble for 1 entire second each shot, that deals no damage because you have to shoot for like 4 seconds before it starts doing good damage.
Although there being so many wacky guns that it does start to feel a little interesting picking which weapons of mass destruction you want to take into a mission and pulling off a 60 enemy nuke is quite fun. Too bad the entire rest of the game reeks of untested literal garbage.
I cant say the game is no fun, but my lord its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chore to play alot of the time. Take that with a slight grain of salt because I'm also playing with my nephew who will throw most missions and never pick up any resources to buy weapons with so I have to both kill everything and pick everything up with half of a screen.
EDIT: On stumbling. I had the displeasure of being caught on fire and literally being stumbled the E N T I R E duration of the fire. It's so bad that you're supposed use a healing device but the like... 0.6 second animation of using it gets interrupted and you just have to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sit there and die while everything eats you and you play your stupid stumble animation
You just can't assume this game to be EDF4.1 / 5 with better graphics. Treat this as a spin-off where they trying new mechanics while retaining the theme of soldiers fighting giant bugs with ridiculous weapons. I played this game in split screen and its actually really fun. The shorter missions also works better IMO since sometimes in main EDF games you just get bored fighting mulitple waves on enemy hordes. In Iron Rain, the shorter mission means you finish it before it feels like a chore and you see what new weapon you unlock and can do next mission trying new weapon. If you want typical horde missions, there are few of them too.
Story and voice acting is top notch, which means it's the usual EDF B-movie script and dub. Just think this is the difference between how EDF US branch operates comapared to EDF Japan branch.
I'm not a die hard EDF fanboy so i probably can appreciate the game more for what it is.
A fun game, i easily recommend it on sale at -70%.
Calling EDF makes you think it is as good as 4.1 which it is not. Still good fun.
First EDF game I played 2017 about 14 years ago. Played everyone since then.
on top of that the AI doesnt help because the devs wont get off their asses and fix it
I mean the AI units who are supposed to be joining you in every mission, the "team" you are on in Iron rain litterally aim in random directions and shoot, they almost never move, they never aim towards the enemy and almost never draw the enemy agro unless you are far away from them and the enemy who would most likely be right ontop of them
but has better graphics than them, im quite excited for it that the people there didnt make the mistake the people who made this game did so far with how it looks, hopefully the game itself isnt gonna be like this as well
