For tips, I'm currently carrying a blunderbuss and a bandolier of buckshot, so whenever I see one of those big zombies in full metal armor I can blast them in the face with it, while using a regular mace as my main weapon. For reloading on the move, make sure your character is standing up straight, as it's easy to hunch your neck while playing without noticing it and thus making the player character crouch with this butt further back, thus making it harder to reach the bandolier.
It wasn't until the breach loaders that muskets became reasonable to reload in a skirmish.
Then it's also very convinient to distance yourself from enemies and load the gun peacufully. But you're right - on smaller maps distance weapon are usuless but it works both sides.
When i see archer - i'm always killing him first - with a one blow. The trick is only to trace him and run at him. So i think there are just few maps where you can use guns - all horse maps and the one with many obstacles.
But the game gives so many possibilities to use the weapon - i was even killing enemies with bow when i run out of arrrows :D
The beauty of this game is that it's pure physics based - so all the rest is up to you. There are multiple ways of dealing with enemies - depending on map/weapon and your imagination.
One thing that can be out of balance - is your armor vs. enemies armors - like yours doesn't protect you as much as them - but in the end - came on - where will be the fun if you're indestructable?
I totally agree that using gun can be stresfull - when you're loading it and in the same time running away from enemies - but it's just keeping the experience more realistic. It's how it was when guns where invented - in one on one combat in ancient times - it was better to choose sword over "one shot" gun. It was also experience during duels - one shot and that's it.
They are not freakin AK47, uzi or minigun :D Just simple one-shot guns.
The one thing i believe could be fixed in this manner is to switch between weapons. Cause sometimes when i want to grab the gun - the character is grabing for example shield, potion or something else - and this is main problem i think - cause you'll not make that mistake in reality. But i don't know - cowboys in early US where also practicing a lot to just pick up the gun and aim quickly. So maybe it's just matter of practice.
