Trials of Fire

What am I missing?
I get the idea of rogue-likes, you play, you make some progress, you die, you start again a little bit stronger. In this game I play, I progress a bit, I die then I start again with the same hp, the same gear and the same cards. Where is the progression, or have I totally missed something?

That's the difference between a "rogue-like" and a "rogue-lite". Rogue-lites give you between-run progression like that. Rogue-likes, the only thing you carry with you is the added knowledge of game mechanics. This game is the latter, having no real progression beyond unlocking a few added options.

Up to individual taste on which is better.

My misunderstanding. I just assumed that something would carry over otherwise if you hit a wall you may as well just delete the game because the next run isn't going to be any better. I love the combat, and don't have a problem with the normal encounters, but getting 2 hours into a run then getting ♥♥♥♥ blocked by an over tuned boss fight every time isn't my idea of fun.

Wish I'd figured out there was no progression before I'd passed the refund threshold.

One of the things about the game is that there is quite a bit to learn, if you keep playing your runs will get easier because you will improve.

You can always backup your Save and "load" like that.
It`s pretty useful to learn Boss encounters :conwayshrug:

Rogue is about enjoy journey.
So nothing will carry forward.
I do agree the boas difficulty is a sudden huge curve.

It's styled on the traditional rogue-like in a sense in that there's not much progression. You can unlock new classes, new starting gear, new cards, and new quests initially.

After the first 20 or so hours most of the unlocks will be higher difficulty (if you choose to climb).

In other words, the main progression is your skill and knowledge.

I decided to start another run on normal difficulty last night and this is my experience.

My party Elementalist (DPS), Warrior (Tank), Warlord (Support). Did as many encounters as I could until my morale was "wavering" managed to level up my tank and support twice and my dps 3 times and picked up a blue shield for the warrior that gave block and shield bash and a few other items that didn't add much tbh and were not worth equipping. I'm finishing the encounters without taking any real damage, although my "tank" seems to be doing most of the DPS as my elementalists cards seem pretty weak.

Get to the first boss with fully healed party and morale still on "wavering" and it's a moth with 45hp, shockwave to knock my party out of cover and spamable ranged attacks that can pretty much delete one of my party every turn, and I don't have anything in my deck to counter it. Game Over.

This has pretty much been my experience every run so far, easy encounters leading to a boss fight that I just feel so under levelled for, should I be ignoring the morale meter and just levelling up regardless? The game doesn't really explain the consequences of low morale.

OK so I'm a dumb ass. Started another run and figured out that you have way longer to get to the boss fight than I'd assumed. I hadn't realised that you could let the morale meter run all the way down to "broken" and that it would recharge as you got closer to the boss.

Got to the first boss in much better shape with more cards, more armour, and a much better understanding of the systems. My dps/tank/support strategy has gone out the window, my elementalist is now basically just a mana battery while my warlord stacks buffs on my warrior and gives the whole team mobility and extra card draws. My warrior has become godlike, able to stack double figure defence on herself and the whole team while her previously mediocre low cost damage cards are now dealing double-figure damage multiple times a turn.

Just done the 3rd boss fight on this run, a dragon with 60hp and finished in 4 turns without ever taking damage. The only fight in the whole run so far that has been any real challenge was a random encounter with a pair of elves with a "soul burn" that prevents you using any more cards if you deal damage to them. Even they were fairly easy once I'd figured out their gimmick, just stack buffs, hamstring, then 1 shot on next turn.

It's frustrating that it's taken me this long to figure it out, the in game codex is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard when it comes to explaining the quite complex game systems.
