Both can have extended functionality with plugins (of where there's a fair few at this point created by people like Jagonz, myself and others too).
I haven't used MZ but, if it's similar to MV in terms of map creation, I feel like Bakin is better too. You get control over each map's renders things like lighting, shadows, skybox, depth of field and a bunch of other stuff too.
I'd watch some videos on both so you can make the most informed decision.
I personally went from Bakin over to MZ, i'm currently in the process of transferring my Bakin project to MZ.
The only reason I would use RPG Maker MZ over Bakin is if I were to want to make a top-down 2D turn based rpg. The tile mapping tool in RPG Maker MZ is great but, that's all.
Overall I'd say pick Bakin over MZ 9.9 times out of 10. Not to mention Bakin is still getting some significant updates in its future from Smileboom, while MZ is hanging on by life support by the community plug-ins.
RpgMaker MZ have few advantages, it can be hosted on a net page and played inside a browser, can be relatively easily ported to phones and is also easier to master than Bakin if you are totally new to game dev.
Also community have made way more plugins than Bakin and it is faster to make things in MZ.
But other than that, Bakin is better in every other way.
It really depends on what you have in mind when making a game.
If you want to make a 3D game for exemple, do not use MZ because even if there is a paid 3D plugin, the engine is not made for 3D games and the performances not great!
IF you're going for 3D game then for sure Bakin is the better option, the 3DMZ plugin is NOT great at all, it's NOT an engine optimised enough for efficient 3D.. where as Bakin IS.
IF you're going for 2D then MZ is definitely your better option because of the hundreds of plugins/scripts the community has made.
.
So, the reason why I moved my project from Bakin 3D to MZ 2D is because i was sick and tired of every update for Bakin something would be changed that would break something in my game or make something faulty. Every update I could guarantee I would have to go back and change something that was working perfectly before the update. This went on for about 5 months. so the 3D option was a sacrifice I had to make. I wasn't prepared to keep fixing stuff every month that shouldn't be breaking in the first place with every update that would need fixing. That said, once bakin comes out of Beta, and the updates to the system stops then i'll go back to it. It's NOT a bad engine, its pretty damn good and better then MZ for sure in the 3D department. In this case though, it was better for me to move my project over to at least to try and get ONE game out the door 'cos in Bakin it would take forever with the issues I was having every update that not even the developers could figure out why stuff would break, after sending them my entire project time and time again when they asked for it. The last straw was when an update broke my battle system I had created, they added a new type of battle preset option, i think it was the SGB Battle System they added into Bakin, THAT broke my entire battle system I had created, I was so pisssed off about that the most, that was the final nail in the coffin.
.
The issue above though should not be taken as 'this will happen to me' situation though, as far as I know it was only MY project and 1 other person in the community this was happening to every month. We even went as far as to swap projects and check each others scripts, code, events, maps, etc to see if there was some type of connection we could make, and nothing came of that.
.
SO.. be aware.. Bakin IS still in Beta, issues might or might not arise that can or cant be fixed at that present time. That aside I will return to Bakin, but not until its most definitely out of Beta, and possibly updates to its core program has stopped.
They have never said they aren’t going to add it. The software is still in Early access there is still time for such requests. People just need to be patient.
but with Bakin, you can create your own UI without programming knowledge, setting up camera for better cinematic for your cutscene. I've been RPG maker fans since RM XP and now I'm now at 750h on Bakin! for me, Bakin is dream come true
