Difficulty curve: hitting 6
This is a great game... though when a level nears '6' it's pretty difficult to get around this:
is there a way to introduce a 'joker' to help break situations like this?

For example, when you have filled your allotted goal of 5 of a colour, could you earn a special move by shooting in-excess?

For me, it's a punishing game, but incredibly compelling. Thanks!

Wow, that idea you put forward is very good. Maybe another bomb that destroys all the enemies of a level every time you get 5 enemies of a color. But it's too late to incorporate things, to enter the code ...
In the last update we reduced the difficulty. Now enemies appear less frequently, both in a single-player game and in a two-player game. But from the beginning of the stage you must be aware that the enemies do not accumulate on one level.
Maybe you have not played the last update, but overcoming the stages in the golden stars is not that difficult anymore.
