So that's the "Definitive Version"?
https://www.rpgsite.net/feature/8611-grandia-hd-collection-meeting-with-gungho-at-e3-2019-and-hands-on-impressions

We are using the original PlayStation code of GRANDIA, but working with the Sega Saturn version to craft the definitive version of this beloved RPG.

Except that the footage doesn't show any trace of the Saturn version at all.

Parms floor textures are a mess, character sprites do not have a right side (it's instead a mirrored left side) and the sky is missing clouds. And what happened to "Addition of MSAA, bloom, normal mapping, and blur effects"?

They promised so much and in the end it boils down to a straight PlayStation port with a new font, filters and widescreen.

I was so excited a year ago ago and now we have a "HD Remaster" that can't even match (let alone beat) the 22 year old Saturn version running in an emulator.

I'll just leave this link here with a bit of further info:
https://www.reddit.com/r/grandia/comments/cpqmsn/grandia_hd_and_broken_promises/

Also how many spoilers can you put in one single trailer?

*edit*
You know, I'm not even going to ask why there's English and German mixed in the gif on your store page (set store language to German, you get a different gif if set to English).

Yep, its a complete train wreck of a port. Its heartbreaking to see such a classic treated so poorly by its IP owner. Then again its not much worse then the terrible things SquareEnix has done to their classics.

It really is a huge disappointment to see that the "HD Remaster" is basically nothing more than a botched PS1 upscale with a lousy 2xSAI filter smeared over everything. They haven't kept any of their initial promises and there's no sign of the Saturn code anywhere (the sprite-mirroring, lack of dynamic scenery shadows, and half-res textures are just.... sigh)

Damned shame.

Oh and even the widescreen part is messed up since they stretch some textures and add a gruesome colour-bleeding blur to the edge of FMVs :\

Can we mod this game after it release? Maybe that the only way to improve it.

Here's some footage of an emulated version, which in my opinion looks way better than the HD remaster.

this looks way better on an emulator...

Remember how the music changes when Sue appears on screen? Yeah... about that.

8:30 if the video doesn't start there by itself

Apparently the music is lagging behind now because the game runs more smoothly or whatever.
Sound effects in battles are also cut off for the same reason I guess.

There is an original Saturn game being translated on SegaXtreme. So fck this soapy *HD* port that's based on the PSX ver.

Very disappointing. I'm not interested in buying a game with blurry, filtered graphics, inferior art assets and FMV that's been tampered with to try and fill out a widescreen aspect ratio it was never intended for. If it ever gets a patch to make it what it should have been, I'll consider it.

Awful.. just awful. Who BAKES in a hardcoded Eagle/Sai filter?? Who? WHY?

~edit~

Oh and the Square-Enix did the same thing with Chrono Trigger at launch on PC, it wasn't just a bilinear filter hardcoded into the game, but the entire sprite sheet was "filtered" too. Gruesome.

Yeah, this is an extremely disappointing port. Grandia 2 HD while not amazing was still a solid port after patches and seeing Grandia 1 treated this way is quite unfortunate.

On second look it seems that they did in fact use the Saturn battle backgrounds. So there's that at least.

Screen flickering between 0:14 to 0:16. Clearly neither Sickhead Games nor GungHo Entertainment had the aptitude to QA test properly. Boy did they ever screw up big time.
