Yes you can choose to be female. There is also a feature that you can possess and character in the game that allows you to run around and do whatever with that character. I played it on their Patreon. The game is still in work, so it would probably be an EA title.

in the single player campaign, we will alternate between male and female characters. As I know, the two playable characters will be Max and Maya. Possession is only available in the sandbox mode, which is currently exclusive to people supporting the title through patreon.

This game is already ruined. Good luck shelling out $$$ between both Patreon and Kickstarter on it. Was cool for a second, but it looks like they've botched it. Best builds were the early builds playing as Maya and tinkering with her looks. All this new stuff with Max is awful and boring.

I get it you want to play a female character and tinker with her looks. That stuff is not gone mate, you will still be able to do that in the final game.

You seemed to misunderstand the story and how you'd play as both the man and the woman.

You should have seen the little boys whining on the Subnautica: Subzero forums. After mocking everyone who wanted to play as a woman in the first one, and the ranting of 'it's only pixels!' and 'You never see yourself!' it was awesome to cut/paste their screaming in the first forum, back to [usually] the same people in the second.

Because in the second one, the main char was a woman.
