Fair race on classic isnt so fair... The ai 100% cheats
It honestly wouldnt be that hard if the ai didnt cheat. Literally they can go from 100 to 40 with out skidding nor spin out while going faster than you around corners WHILE YOU SPIN OUT going slower than them... They can run threw grass with out spining out, even that grass ram they will not even fly all over the place. The only time a crash happens from a spin out on the AI is scripted or if like you hit them. Like I get this is a 2002 game, but that at least from what I hear had a short cut you could take... This you just literally have to play flawless, plus the fact this is two hours into the game, the only experience you get with driving is with a car that caps out at like 60 after 30 seconds of straight driving. Then they dump a race car that should be top of the line but has worse handling than your first ♥♥♥♥ car you drive... like that first car you drive doesnt really skid out unless youre going like 50 mph around a corner, this race car though. you press breaks going 60 mph and your guy will do like 300000 360s while cars driving faster just can turn a corner going 60mph no issue. Its bs game design that I bet you most people who dont play driving games Pass after like 50 tries due to sheer luck.

I rarely get salty at things, but when something isnt 100% my fault that im losing, its tilting as hell especially since you have to try a million times to get lucky. And I dont wanna turn it to easy cuz 1. Im stubborn 2. You dont get the achievement for beating it on classic.

I just downloaded a classic save for right after you beat the race. If theyre going to make the AI cheap as hell, and not make it fair. I am not going to spend a few hours trying to do it. Plus the fact I HAVE NOT PLAYED A RACING SIM GAME since the ps1 so I 100% suck at it, if I tried more I could get good. BUT I dont play racing games, so there is zero point. I had to switch to a controller while doing that race, as racing with a keyboard and mouse especially when you cant make 1 mistake is literally impossible for me.

Went to Youtube myself watched a guy do it and the race I tried after that I won.
Basically just go over the grass and you should be fine.
Of course you'll still need to actually drive good but that is part of the challenge.

But yes they do cheat you won't be able to catch up if you drive the same way they do.

I was doing that, id cut through the grass as I noticed you can just ram into the cars and get like 5th place or 6th, then repeat. But as I have stated its the racing like a race sim gamer part that I wasnt great at. I am far above average at mostly any game I play, especially action/shooter games but racing games, NEWP. Plus the rng with raming, some times it will go smooth, other times youre the only one to spin out cuz the ai kinda cheats and can instantly re adjust lol.

I am fine with hard as long as its still kinda fair, but the only game that I will deal with cheating ai is starcraft 1 and 2, but thats cuz im actually pretty good at those games.
This race in this game felt harder than the old racing games on ps1 though, like GT and stuff on the hardest settings. BUt I think those games, they try to make the AI drive realistic, and not have it so they go from 100 mph to 60 and turn a corner like that with out skidding out XD, plus those games if you drove like the AI you could at least stay close to them, this one its like they speed up far faster and even if you are top speed I swear in this game they catch up to you. Oh well, nothing a save mod couldnt fix :^). I bet this is the hardest mission by far in the game lmao

Well there is one other mission where you probably lose your cool as have many others.

Anyway the mission is really difficult and i think it have really high rubber banding that really forces you to use what ever shortcut, tight turns and vehicle blocks you can do. When i finish this race on classic, it come really close for opponent to drive past me but just manage to win it.

If it is a racing one, then maybe LOL. I only got salty cuz the ai is kinda unfair. If it is like a shooting mission, then I can easily handle it. So far on classic everything as been easy BUT that racing mission that was such a bump in difficulty. went from 0-100 real fast XD. Either way, this is a really good game.

Yes, the Fair Play on Classic is perhaps the most annoying part of any game that I've ever played, ever....in my entire life.

If you change the difficulty, you won't get the achievement for finishing the game in Classic difficulty

I finally beat it, after 7 hours of attempts over three days and restarting it after 30-50 seconds into the race. Just think, how many hundreds of times I attempted it. Assuming I retried the race about once per minute (fairly accurate), that means I attempted this race ~420 times (NICE)

Here's my best advice

Mute the game completely, obviously, and put on some chill music.

Plug in a controller (or connect a wireless bluetooth) and use it for the race.
On the first turn, you have to brake as much as possible (don't forget this on the 2nd and 3rd laps, as your car will be going 120mph on that home stretch. You gotta let off the gas about a quarter of the way after the straightaway ends. Avoid collisions here, as the cars are just in a giant cluster. Make sure you're only going ~30mph around the turn. When going around the turn, feather the brake, and then as you come out of the turn, start feathering the throttle and then slam it.

Don't get too carried away and try to squeeze through other cars. These cars are super annoying, and since they all follow the same pathing, you're essentially racing the entire pack. If your wheels get caught in the axle of another car, you'll be significantly slowed down and that car is just going to keep following its predetermined path until you can get unstuck, so that can cost you quite a few seconds. You'll have places where you can overtake the other cars.

Change the camera angle to "1st person"

To get the perfect jump, you'll want your RPM's to be about three quarters of the way toward max--so that when the race starts, your car can accelerate as fast as possible.

Don't try to overtake anyone until after you make the first turn.

On the second turn, you can cut through the grass on the right and get past a few "AI" opponents

On the third turn, do this again, but beware the cobblestone wall is jutting out a bit. Get a feel of how the car maneuvers on the grass. It is more prone to sliding, but you can drift the corners with a tiny bit of practice. Keep your car all the way onto the left of the track after the second turn, so you can plan a relatively straight shot along the grass for the third turn. When you get back on the actual track, tap the brake to get the tires to stick to the pavement better. This will prevent you from slamming into the wall.

On the "z" turn towards the end of the lap, follow the other cars paths on that turn. They essentially go all the way to the right part of the track, and then angle across. This is the other proper way to take this turn, from what I've noticed.

Right after the "z" turn, the next turn is an absolute pain. For some reason the texture of the road is weird and you can easily take that turn way too wide and hit the rock wall. Feather brake coming into turn, turn wheels, feather gas on exit. Do this for all turns (I think I repeated myself oops)

On the first lap, there will be a car that crashes after the third turn.

On the second lap, there will be a car that decides to launch itself off where that "Z" turn is, before the "half-pipe" turn.

On the final lap, there will be a 3rd car to crash--I can't exactly remember where this happens though...but the race is scripted, so one of the 15 cars will crash, every single lap. There will also be a water tanker truck putting out the car that crashed at the "z" turn on the left, so be mindful of that.

On the second lap when the car launches off the "z" turn before the half pipe, slow down a bit because sometimes the wreck decides to land right in front of you if you're going too fast.

If you manage to get into the top 5 after the first lap, you could possibly get into 1st place if you do everything as best you can (since there's three scripted car wrecks--it's not the same car every time for each crash though). If you're not in the top 5, or if the other cars are too far ahead (use the mini-map and look for gold, silver, bronze, black), then restart and try again.

Avoid collisions as best you can, and if another car hits you from behind in a pit maneuver fashion, immediately restart the race by exiting to main menu, then immediately loading the story again...if you spin out, the race might as well be over.

Good luck :)

Edit: I see you already skipped it. Heh....I almost caved in and did that. Hopefully my above advice helps someone.

Thanks for the advice, someone who reads it will find it helpful. I did find that out on my own, it was just kinda racing perfect that was the hard and frustrating part, as I've said.. I do not play driving games. I did use a controller for this. Often in games like this, I will switch to controller for driving, then go back to keyboard and mouse when I get out.

I just hated seeing how literally non of the ai would have skid marks on the ground when taking turns, like since theyre ai they can do everything perfect but thats pretty much cheating at that point. Usually racing sim games from what I have seen and played way in the past, simulate how a person drives, and tries to pretty much make the ai PRO drivers, with out being just a clear robot lol. I find it silly that you have to literally CHEESE the race to win lmao. I wonder how many times the guy who chose the settings for classic had to play test the race part to see if he could beat it. Unless they yolo put it out thinking people will find a way LOL.

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate cheating in games too. I almost never do it cuz I always feel sick in my stomach, just like a gut rot. I've done it twice in the past like 10 years where I cheat in a game. One was a dragon age 2 boss fight on nightmare where the boss took like 30 minutes to kill, it wasnt really hard just super long and I didnt have the gear for it. And I almost beat it the first try then died cuz idr why, so I just said "♥♥♥♥ this im turning god mode on" and it still took like 10-15 minutes to finish that LOL. I was likely under geared but had no quest left to do.
Like I play souls like games a lot, and every game on the hardest setting so I will sit there and try to beat a hard boss for like an hour with out getting upset. BUT jesus this game, this was the hardest ever mission i've every played in my life I think. Like facing a grandmaster in starcraft would be easier LMAO

Isn't that just a graphics performance thing? Even the scripted crashes don't leave skid marks behind.

And for the player, it is generally faster not to slide around enough to draw skid marks. Aside from spinning up the inside rear wheel while accelerating off corners, which makes sense because these cars predate the invention of limited slip differentials.

It took me something like 23-27 tries and I finally won....by a mile too!! I just started to treat it like Forza Motorsport (not to be confused with Horizon) and slowly but firmly braked into corners that needed it, or just let off the throttle in others. While gently accelerating in softer corners. I also used the "ram" button to help straighten the car out. I feel like the devs should have approached this differently. If I want a simulation, sure. As I am playing on Classic. Even then, it could have been a little more forgiving.

Like most people playing this game likely are not long time racing game players, like me lol. I rarely play driving games, unless its in like GTA but this games driving is a bit more real feeling than gta. But it should have been more forgiving as its literally like a few chapters into the game, the 5th I think. you go from driving POS cars to a speed demon.. It just seems out of place and it being a classic game is no excuse for a bad decision. Like most players wont realize they gotta cheese the race to win, once you start cheesing you do FAR better. But oh well kek, it would have been cool if they had different scenes for 1-3rd place to make it more forgiving. Then have an achievement for 1st place. Cuz i'd always get 3rd place.

It might be, I think its just more of the fact it's AI to its full extent driving perfectly. Like 100% perfect,
