UPDATE 1:

FOR WINDOWS 8.1- i HAVE HAD ZERO ISSUES RUNNING IT, I STARTED AND PLAYED THE GAME WITHOUT HAVING TO CHANGE OR MESS WITH ANYTHING.

FOR WINDOWS 7- INITIALLY I COULDN'T GET IT TO START AT ALL, I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE MAIN MENU BY BYPASSING THE LAUNCHER WITH THE STEPS SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO. WITH THE VIDEO BELOW I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE MAIN MENU BUT I WAS NOT ABLE TO START THE GAME, WOULD CRASH AS SOON AS YOU HIT STORY OR TRY TO CHANGE SETTINGS. I HAVE BEEN SPEAKING TO A COUPLE PEOPLE ON THE FORMS WHO CLAIM TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET IT RUNNING ON WINDOWS 7 BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE RESULTS ON MY RIG.

CONCLUSION: IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 8.1 I WOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT IT. INFACT IT IS RUNNING BETTER THAN MAFIA 3 DID. IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 7 I WOULD CAUTION YOU IN PURCHASING IT. I AM GOING TO KEEP LOOKING TO SEE IF I CAN FIND A WORKAROUND FOR WINDOWS 7 BUT TILL A RELIABLE WORKAROUND IS FOUND I WOULD NOT PURCHASE IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 7. WINDOWS 8.1 ON THE OTHER HAND IS FINE.

ALSO WANTED TO ADD THAT I THINK THERE MAY BE SOME MISSING FILES IN PLAY THAT MAY BE CAUSING THE ISSUES WITH WINDOWS 7 COMPATIBILITY. I AM STILL LOOKING INTO IT. BUT IT IS VERY HARD TO SAY WHAT SPECIFIC FILES ARE NOT COMPATIBLE OR MISSING. I STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THE GAME RUNNING ON THE WINDOWS 7 COMPUTER. BUT THE WINDOWS 8.1 COMPUTER IS WORKING JUST FINE I HAVE ALMOST COMPLETED THE GAME WITH IT. WILL UPDATE AGAIN IF I LEARN ANYTHING FURTHER.

WE HAVE ACHIEVED A SOLUTION TO WINDOWS 7. I MARKED THE CORRECT ANSWER BELOW. I HAVE TESTED THIS OUT ON MY SYSTEM AND ALSO ON A FRIENDS WINDOWS 7 COMPUTER AS WELL AND THE SOLUTION SOLVES THE CRASHING AND THE GAME NOW PLAYS NORMALLY. WE DID IT, I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO COMING UP WITH A SOLUTION. WE HAVE SHOWN WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE WHEN WE COME TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY. WE NOW HAVE COMPATIABILTY WITH WINDOWS 7 AND WINDOWS 8.1.

I did read there is no longer side missions
just mission after mission
and that the game was considered by kids to be to hard, so they made the DE easier far far easier

then there is free roam, where u could get cars and such that now is removed as you used to have to drive cars back, to keep em now u just get in and hop out done

the combat i read again was dumbed down to mafia 2 and 3.. ick i loved the difficulty of the original.. why on earth are devs listening to kids that complain games are to hard

this is why bioshock infinite is crap *nice story though and system shock rocks
system shock 1 and 2 were insanely difficult esp on harder settings

this gen i dont get..
put them in front of an old LucasArts game like monkey island or sam and max DOTT etc
and they wont know how to continue other than google the walkthrough which then they will complain they could beat those games in an hour..

wish they hadnt changed anything but added more and gfx it up

I want to say, that I'm grateful for all your work to find a solution to play Mafia on Windows 7 or 8. I started watching this topic from the beginning. I really wanted to refund the game, but after you found the solution, I just did the same and now I can play. Still it sucks that I can't play on Fullscreen (especially when I want to record it; Fullscreen = glitch/black screen) but I'm happy I can enjoy the game. Shame that 2K Czech with Hangar 13 along with Microsoft did what they did, but now I know to have faith in community. When the creators are bad guys, at least the players are good guys. Of course I know that sooner or later all video games will work at least on Windows 10 or above, but until then I can enjoy the game.

By the way, I don't know if you already know this, but Remake didn't have any update yet. Isn't it weird? Like the creators don't want fix any bugs, glitches and so on.

and a huuuuge sod off to the devs for doing this on purpose as a hotfix would indeed allow win 7 users to play this just fine... they coded it this way on purpose.

and yeah I was talking about updates or such as the game cannot be bug free
so lets hope this fix works no matter what
or the devs fix it so that win 7 is indeed supported.

and a huge middle finger to the win 10 posters who came here just saying upgrade to win 10 as the solution to win 7 and 8
seriously this is the whole purpose of this thread, to find a way to make it work and wonder why the game itself didnt install proper files for all 7 8 and 10

Many thanks to you guys for makind the game finally work on Win7. That's amazing job!

As for me I still have one little issue. As long as the game doen't launch on fullscreen with this fix (has to be windowed mode), it shows me one annoying border on the screen at the right.

well I know a really fast fix
use your monitor settings to expand just a little bit until thats gone(you will lose the same on both sides but its not much

i have not a clue what that would be...HUD overlay? is it yellow now? idk again dont have this version

what res you playing at 1080?

I have the same issue (instead of yellow bar, I have a blue bar from my deskop), but I found a temporary solution. Since I play 1920x1080, first I select low resolution and then change to the previous one. So, in my case, I change to 1600x900, quit the game, launch the game, change to 1920x1080 and disable bordless mode (sorry if I wrote it wrong - I don't play English). Unfortunately when I launch the game, the issue starts again. But as long as you don't turn off the game or minimize, your issue will be solved.

Hard to say. After I changed the resolution and disable bordless window, I checked screen borders (I think that's called in English) to maybe change something but I didn't have to. Maybe try there? Maybe because of it you don't see properly the saving icon?

I downloaded a mod for first person view in the vehicles and it works correctly, so mods should also work :)

It's converting the draw calls so that it can be rendered by Vulkan, so it shouldn't break mods. I once tried it with Skyrim, and all my mods worked fine.
Also, Vulkan defaults to exclusive fullscreen when a window equals the display size, so it should be like normal fullscreen.

Note the above remapping using RESHADE also needs a recent driver update to be applied.

Squadrons + Win7 is a go.

You'll see 4 files inside. You only need ReShade64.dll so extract it to your desktop and rename it to dxgi.dll

I'm not sure what the file structure is for this game but you could try putting it where the game's executable is and see if it works.


I guess the driver update must be why it didn't work for me, all the newest nvidia drivers tank the performance of any game I try them with for whatever reason. Oh well, i'm not about to hop from one driver to another just to make either this game or literally any other game playable but I'm glad the situation isn't totally hopeless for those of us still on windows 7.

Did this work? I'm like 90% sure this would be the preferred solution, especially if you have an Nvidia GPU.

achievements, played time, overlay, cloud saves etc works with this method?

Woah finally, so it was WDDM all the way, the Direct X compatible libs or something else was at play. And Vulkan allowed it to run, cool method. Thanks everyone. This is a good find, hopefully this allows other games as well which are DX11 only but not on Win7/8.1
