Looks like 2K launcher does something to game files that causes the crash.
To fix this, go to your Steam Library page, right-click the game, select Properties, go to Installed files tab then click on "Verify integrity of game files" button. Wait until it finishes and try again.
Note that this may reset some of your settings, but do try the game first to see if it crashes before changing anything.
Stupid game publishers just have to add their own launchers everywhere ...
EDIT Weirdly enough, it still crashes and it only seems to do that when I press Enter on "Press ENTER to start" prompt. If I click my left mouse button instead, it continues running properly.
1. run the game from the mafiadefinitiveedition.exe directly without launcher (in the launcher you can set the full screen mode and the resolution, but do not run it via it)
2. run mafiadefinitiveedition.exe file and steam.exe as administrator for all users. Right click on the exe icon -> compatibility mode -> ....
Got it to work. Just changed video settings in launcher back to what they should be (recent patch lowered them). Launched game, which crashed. Then re-validated game files. Launched again and then right before menu screen when it says to press Enter, i clicked left mouse button instead and got to menu. All was normal from then on.
