For low power weapons people take 1 shot to the head, 3 shots to the torso and about a dozen to the extremities.
Low power weapons are revolvers, pistols, thompsons and shotguns. This is real-world accurate. Thompsons shoot .45acp which is the same bullet as in the auto pistol, revolvers vary with slightly weaker (.38) and slightly more powerful (magnum), but I don't think the game cares much. Thompson misses as much as it hits, and often hits extremities (they do the thompson wiggle dance) so it seems a bit weaker.
I think shotguns here use #1 buck which is about a dozen pellets, so at close range you're getting at least 10 rounds to the torso - instant death. At medium range you're giving them two or three in the torso, and possibly one in the head, so possible instant death. Long range shotguns are useless.
When I aim the thompson and control my fire, I usually aim at the upper chest, fire two or three rounds per burst, and one of them clips their neck or head, and they're dead.
Subguns sucked until, I think, the MP5? Even that is a piece of complete ♥♥♥♥, when I was shooting one it was walking all over the place. I doubt I could hit someone who was standing 10 feet away.
