Remember Mafia 1 classic lost songs too, probably because license was aquired by different studio. They can't get those song anymore, who know if too much money or simply new studio doesn't want to sell it to game like Mafia.

Anyway, new songs seems fine. Yes nostalgia lost, but we will live with it.

That cant be the case, they have the music license currently, they just re-released Mafia 2 Definitive Edition with Belleville in the soundtrack. So unless they fraudently kept the song in the re-release of Mafia 2 Definitive Edition. 2k currently holds rights to the song.

We don't know who holds it. Mafia 2 isn't Mafia 1. Sure they didn't go and remove it from Mafia 1 afte 15 years because it was easy and in 2k hands.

Something else is going on.

We really don't know if 2K holds any rights or what licence agreements are in place. Entertainment OST's can be very complex especially on older music in regards to ownership. Even if some music is produced by an in-house artist, they still may lay claim to the majority of the material for instance.

Mafia games have seen songs been omitted in the past and typically individual songs each hold their own rights so just because an artist currently has one song active; that doesn't mean their catalogue can also be included.

Quite a few songs from the original Mafia may simply be out of reach to copy or recreate due to such issues that probably would just take too long to secure if at all. It certainly isn't as easy as it used to be to licence music for things like gaming either.

I think I have figured out what is going on. Most of Django Reinhardt music is owned by a company called Jewel Music Publishing. But the song Belleville has no publicly known owner. My theory is that the song has become basically abondonware. It is not considered public domain but at the same time the current license holder is unknown. So hanger 13 had no ability to purchase the license for the song. At the same time they were able to keep Belleville in Mafia 2 because the contract for the original mafia 2 license was still valid.

More than likely the case, plus if the song was shadow-owned and they decided to include it without permission, they could end up in legal trouble which could impact their relationship with other artists they've licensed content from.

Basically if there are any surprise omissions in this remake then it's probably for good reason.
Or they simply didn't want to add it since it's from 1946, 10 years after mafia 1

Actually 8 years, and 5 years before one scene in epilogue.
it was first released in 1942 and that's the version in the original

they were probably copywronged by original composers, it's also likely they wanted to give a new version of agame a new soundtrack as well, especially with new actors
Jewel Music Publishing is the Reinhardt estate. His family has been bundling his music into various "new" albums since the mid 50s in order to skirt copyright laws for tracks that should otherwise be public domain by now. They are notorious for being both greedy and stingy with permissions, so maybe the developers just didn't want to deal with these folks more than they had to.
i think that the licensed music is also gone from the original mafia 1 on steam. I guess they didnt wanna pay anymore xD

You are right about them. But the strange thing with Jewel Music Publishing is I was able to look over there catalog of content and Belleville is oddly missing. I think that if they are as stingy as there reputation makes them. I bet they held back that song from the public to extort Hanger 13 because they saw additional value in that song. Unless there is some shadow person or entity that owns the rights to it.

At least there's some Django...and a boatload of Duke Ellington? Huh.

*Says a prayer for the clever modders who can add in more music to work their magic.
To be honest I don't care for the new face of the protagonist. Knowing this tune isn't in the game makes it only halfway there, so I'm delaying my purchase until I can mod the mug to be more like the old one and until I can add music.
