Do you recommend playing for first the second game, or playing the remake first and then Mafia 2?

In terms of story and gameplay: Do you recommend waiting for the remake first?

I don't know what the above person was talking about. Mafia II was the only in the series that I've played and there wasn't any character or point in its story that seemed like a continuation of the first game. You play an American-Italian man who just got back from the war and your childhood friend who didn't join the Army and is now a gangster helps you make some money hooking you up with the mafia, you do their dirty jobs and grow from there. Gameplay is simple: drive and shoot, nothing else. I'd say if you want to play Mafia 2 first, go ahead.

That's the point.. you didn't get it because you didn't play Mafia 1. You missed a mind blowing realisation because you jumped on the second without playing the first.

i think its so cool they tied both stories form 1 into 2 im hoping to see a improved looking Vito Scaletta & Joe Barbaro at the ending of this one

1 and 2 had very little in common story-wise. The story tie-in isn't strong in terms of the characters' biography, it is really not worth mentioning - apart from probably making you smile briefly on the first playthrough (which to be fair is what sp-games are for in my book).

In 1 you have working public transport which 2 is sorely lacking.
The world in 2 is bautifully animated (for it's time) and appears rich at first glance, yet it offers little in terms of off-mission interaction. To be fair, same goes for 1 minus the gfx technology-gap.
Judging by the gameplay-preview(s), the remake of 1 sadly inherits the semi-automagic cover-shooter mechanics from the later two incarnations - does this mean they also destroyed the more hands-on driving-feel that made the first title interesting, as well?

depends.. if you know absolutely nothing about Mafia 1, not even the main character's name, then the best order is Mafia II then Mafia 1

Otherwise, Mafia 1 and then 2

If you want to play III too, best order if you know nothing about Mafia 1 is Mafia 2, 3 and 1
