nah man we're getting news at the sgf
Because if that’s not the case, and Silksong is going to end up releasing 2-3 years from now, then coming out with that statement last year would potentially make them look really bad in the public eye by the end of all this. It would bring into question their ability to manage their development time properly. People would be asking stuff like, “Do they actually know what they’re doing? How could they overestimate a launch window by several years? Were they planning to release the game well before it was finished?”
Without any other context around why the delay happened for that length of time, I believe it would make people lose a lot of confidence in the project, and in Team Cherry themselves. At its worst, it would pretty much confirm peoples’ fears / suspicions that the game is in development hell, and they’d want an answer to the lack of transparency.
The problem with this is the "public eye" treats team cherry like they can do no wrong. If you bring up the delay, people say it's because TC is just "adding more content, it'll be worth it when the game comes out. You'll see." The impression that the delay is just to add more stuff means people will be okay with a delay of literally any length of time. They won't question 0 communication and a 3 year delay because they think it will be worth it.
TC has fallen into this trap where they've grown such a reputation for not communicating that if they say anything, people will assume the game is on the way. However, they don't have to say anything. Anyone who brings up a lack of communication and transparency gets swarmed by a bunch of HK fans being white knights.
