Hollow Knight: Silksong

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Instead of optional health bars, do this
Make different damage states for enemies visible, like certain games do (like Doom: Eternal, and Silent Hill: Downpur, if I remember correctly). The more hits a certain enemy takes, the more damaged it becomes.

Example 2 [i.imgur.com]

This way, the game would become even more immersive while it would also inform players better who would like to know more about their enemies health.

they cant apply this to all enemies but nice idea would be good for bosses

Those are some neat edits, I'm also a big fan of this idea with or without healthbars.

Enemy health bars are ick. One of the worst things to ever happen to games. This is a *much* better solution (though its a significant increase in art assets).

Yeah, it would definitely be an increase, but they (Team Cherry) wouldn't have to create entirely new assets, they would just have to slightly modify already existing assets. What you can see in the two pictures linked above, I did those under two minutes with MS Paint. I'm sure it wouldn't take much longer for them to create high quality art modifications.

Don't feel the need, but can't see why not :)

If they feel the need to add some kind of damage indicator, this is the only way to do it.

I think it will take several months for them to do it

Very interesting idea, certainly much better than a life bar, but still this mechanic in my opinion should be limited only on some enemies

I mean, Hollow Knight sort of does this already with the stagger on bosses (technically it is number of hits rather than damage, but from player perspective it works, and could be modified to be damage instead), and certain bosses do have health gated moves (Nightmare Grimm being an easy example). Both are good ways of displaying damage without a health bar or visual damage (which is still better than a bar).

I don't think it's that easy. Those animations are hand drawn, right? So they'd have to repaint every frame.

I would love a Doom Eternal style damage system, but Team Cherry hand draws everything.
They are only 5 people.
That would take forever to do.

Healthbars are the next best option.
