Help please!! Wells?

Ok, how do you make them work? Do you have to dig down first and if so how far?

the centre block just has to have water in it but they haven't implemented ground water yet so wells are pointless atm but they'll work by a river or lake.
Just use them as eye candy for now

I feel like part of building a well ought to be digging a hole that fills with water, whether they add ground water (would be cool) or just made it that a well needed to be built over an empty hole and then it works! Spent too much time digging down to see if this would be the case only to be disappointed when I hit bedrock.

you can build an underwater trench to make it work that connects to a body of water.
