Having trouble with underground tempurature ..
Hey guys getting into this game .. I have a big base. And I've more or less gotten through without cold storage through overproduction and hunting. However I got to the point where I wanted to address that so I built a nice big underground vault .. Had to be super careful .. A bit of save scumming due to my noobishness causing some collapses .. Nothing major .. My vault is great. Temp at -2c about. All according to keikaku.

BUT then I put down flooring .. because the food will spoil without it right? Well now I've floored the entire thing and suddenly the vault is like 10c .. only like 10c lower than the surface. I .. I don't get it. Why did putting FLOORING in lower the ambient temp!? And in that case how do I fix this?

Any walls, ground or ceiling you put is creating insulation which makes it warmer. The general rule to making underground storages is. Do not put a ceiling (go 2 or 3 low at least, I tend to go 3), do not put on walls, let the natural ground be your walls and lastly, only put in the flooring, I always do limestone (not blocks) just cause it has the worst insulation.

That will get it fixed real good.

I did exactly that though there are 2 layers of dirt above the storages the walls are all natural. It's a pretty big room. I cut around slabs of dirt to make support columns and used the roof supports to hold everything up. Other than the doors, Floor and roof supports Nothing in there but dirt .. Honestly to me it makes NO sense it should be frigid down there lol.

Just leave a 1 tile ring around the edges of the room that has no floor and is not part of the stockpile zone.

Basically the game currently has some wonky mechanics. Natural tiles offer near perfect insulation. However, once you start putting in floors or walls, that perfect insulation gets reduced allowing heat in. For this reason you also want a natural roof, rather then flooring, as anything over then natural tiles provides less insulation.

For best results, make your cellar twice as big you as want it to be, then only floor half of it. Leave the other half completely natural. This will preserve as much of the natural insulation as possible while still giving you a safe place to store things.

i just do this:

Dig down two layers, dig a room out, leave ONE open area for access, slap a door in it. It's good.

No problems doing this.

Yah I get it beta is beta. It just makes me lol because floors are apparently radiators .. I'll try the 1 tile thing XD

Edit : I had to remove two whole layers of tiles but that did work .. I guess that makes sense. I know in future I'll probably limit the size of underground storage rooms. It does seem to be the case that temp mechanics for large vaults are .. not working as intended right now. Though perhaps it's cos I've got two double doors going into it. In hindsight that was probably a mistake. But I figured 3 layers down It would be so cold it wouldn't matter .. go figure.

I built an underground room with nothing above it but dirt. The ceiling collapsed all the way to the surface.??? wtf. There should have been no issues with stability but it let in the heat so now the underground room is the same temp as outside. Why the collapse?

I dig my storage 2 floors deep. Leave the entire walls floors and ceiling natural despite a few supports. Now I place a handfull of pillars and have a floating Storage. Ice Ice Baby ;-)
