Just build a nice little ark first :P
Seriously though, you can fill in areas once you get used to the mechanics. ie. I diverted a river around a nice hill and created a nice plateau for my people, they love the riverside view
Has this been changed? I really want to damn the river and stop the flow temporarily at least, in order to get to some materials and divert some of the flow to other areas.
I should mention, I did a small 2-square wide damn on the upper level, but it didn't stop the flow of water down stream (made sure I was building on riverbed) and while it was only a couple of days in game, it did not flood behind it.
More info would be very helpful, either from devs or from those who have successfully made a dam, even a temp one,
EDIT: Just keep at least a square of river running around (like a 1 square stream).
Otherwise you will flood everthing just making a dam and completely try to stop it. If you can reach the side of map, river flow still happens ;)
