If you designed appropriate battle field for unique melee unit with appropriate good perks of him, You may get a super warriors who can't be replaced by any archer!!
Here is my super speed perks melee hero,who can chop enemies like a storms.However I've paused the game from then for waiting developer to do anything about perks or skills inheritance. In case of he died,I hope there will be next genius generation like him to make a fun of game!!!
as decoy only to pin down their archers at the place I wish!!!
1 Ambushing archer with melee, When an archer is closely by his/her enemy he/she can only punch back not fire back!!!So try to separate enemies' melees and archers.Let your archers fire from the roof behind 2-3 merlons as decoys (archer can fire without blocking from objects 2 grids in front of him however I do with 3 merlons for guarantee no hurt of my archers).then let your melee hide in the building for ambushing their archers wait until they come near your building then let the ambush begin!!!.
PS.The most disadvantage battle field of range unit is in cave or maze!!
2 Using melee as assassin during battle,In this case you need super speed perks melee with very high melee skill and best sword.Let he face one by one at a time with your melee enemy. He/She can chop faster than them However do not let he/she handle more than 2 enemies at a time.2-hands sword is the fastest weapon which can do more damage per sec than any ranged weapon!!
Note: Although it might be not a good idea but it happen to me once. If you sure that his/her damage can do one-hit-one-kill you can even leave him/her facing your enemies in a line one by one alone.

In the picture, I had no need to use any other melee units so they didn't need to hold weapon in their hand.
3 Using a gap like window or hole for a range advantage of each type of melee weapons. Berdiche is the longest range which can cross the gap more than 2-hands sword can cross an in front of hole of your melee and reach left and right as well(20 grids around melee). 2-hands sword range just can cross an in front of hole of your melee(12 grids).While 1 hand sword can't cross the hole,only reach around attacker (8 grids).

There's a reason why longbows dominated the day and then even knights got dominated by peasants carrying crossbows
