To further answer the OP's question, also if you have a male and female wolf trained to pet status, there is still a chance for them to breed as well. Those are not wildlife and don't stay in a pen.
Hey thanks, yeah it's always an unknown with game mechanics. Sometimes there's a mechanic in place that you figure out after hours of gameplay and think, "wow it would've been nice to have known that five hours ago!"
I managed to find some information that apparently if animals are within 10 squares of each other without walls, there is a chance they'll reproduce each hour - thus why they do not have to be within pens, but being in pens can help!
