WELLS are not available until FIRE comes in an Update. But then this sounds like you are trying to pretend/make a well, in Marshland. Not that it will do anything for you. Or are you on a BETA Server, instead of "Normal Game" one?

My well has no water. It also happens I started on the map that has no river. Related?

Currently you can only place the wells on a river or lake. The settlers can only get the water from the wells or rain barrels. They can't get the water directly from the river.

You can use a well by a source of water. What you need to do is make a single soil block in the water 1 square away from the bank. Then place the well so the center of the well in over water using the soil block you built as the platform.

An asterix to add here if anyone else stumbles on this the way i did, the base of the well shaft needs a dirt floor. I had made a moat/canal thing and lined it with limestone for aesthetics. The well did not work. Removing the floor was necessary.

To clarify this comment, it does not need to be a natural river.
You can make a canal or whatever.
