a hauling priority list would be nice too
I've had a hunter kill 5 deer and leave each corpse on the ground. I manually had to task a settler to collect them (during winter) and she almost froze to death lmao.
When you cut a tree it's far more effective to cut down a bunch of them and THEN bring this all back. Your backpack is full every travel between the cutting zone and the storage zone. So in a lot of situation what you ask won't be effective at all. But I understand it's annoying
Tasking one settler with all of the hauling creates an imbalance in the tasking system. If settlers are constantly dropping items on the ground (6-7 settlers dropping multiple stacks of wood, clay, etc.) then you lose an entire settler who never really completes a given task (hauling). If each settler hauled their respective material to a stockpile, then they could complete their respective task and remove the need to have a dedicated hauler. It saves time. Often times, material on the ground builds up faster than a hauler can collect it, especially on a map with multiple terrain levels.
you're right this is a waste.
I'm hauling with all my guys all together (usually after a combat or mining)
This worked perfectly at the beginning of my game. Right now (11 guys) they don't give a damn about It ^^ (Kinda buggy I'd say, and nothing to change it)
Look at the Rimworld mod "Opportunistic Hauling". That would go a long way to solving the current clutter on the ground.
Also, when a harvester has harvested enough to fill their carry capacity, they should pick up what they've harvested and take it to the stockpile.
But we're still very early in this game's life. Even Rimworld took time to optimize things like this. And even in 1.3 it still requires mods to make the AI not be dumb.
