I myself have the rule everything under or up to 10 ranged gets the shortbow. Everything from or above 10 to 20 the longbow. Everything from or above 20 to 30 the crossbow and everything from 30 the heavy crossbow. With this heavy crossbow you also have the possibility of the described regular on-hit kills.
A longbow is for highly trained and muscular people. You have with a longbow a very high range and with certain arrowheads a high impact on your enemy.
When this is in the game it is the oppsote of Ant Ra's explanation for the use in combat and against invaders. I havent actually tested it and had only used crossbows so far.
LongBow have a good dps and more armor penetration. The crosswbow have about the same dps as the longbow but have more armor penetration and range.
I use crossbow for people that will not move and bow for strike team. Bow is better when I want mobility and are more interested by hurting people to slow them than kill them.
