I think it's chance based. The moment the enemy flees there's a chance some of them will surrender to you before fleeing the map. Also confirmed you don't have to have a designated prison to have them surrender in such a fashion but good luck keeping them in check if you don't.
at full health they tend to just run away.
Some of these raids were given to me as lost with only 2-3 enemies left alive, being these pursued and eliminated.
I don't understand the defeat conditions, is it given to me as lost just because of the battle time? What's my fault that it takes them so long to reach me, or is it that I have to build my walls right on the edges of the map? They only break at most a couple of doors on the outer walls. I would understand that they give me a loss when they incapacitate 2/3 of my villagers or if they break several work tables. But only breaking doors and incapacitating a couple of my 7 villagers makes no sense.
5 were captured from raids, and 1 purchased from the merchant. I tend to capture Fierce Marauders as they are tall people with good stats (2), Archers with good stats (1), and young people / people with really good perks (3). I only try to capture or buy the people with qualities I need. I released the first ever prisoner as he had glitched and shrank in a small cell, and I felt sorry for him like I was working a very small child. I moved to a larger cell with all amenities, where 3 others have been converted and 2 are right now in my jail sowing fields. I plan on next finding one of the battering ram guys next because they are giants.
During the raid I find it easier to slow the people I want to keep alive by tapping them with a heavy crossbow from the same level at a distance to massively drain their HP but not kill them, or focus short bows on them for a little while until the HP is low, then divert fire.
I have found the best way to initiate a raid is to tap the enemy negotiator so he leaves the map (I melee him), as this then spawns the raid next to my negotiator who is armed with a heavy crossbow. I check the spawn and tap the ones I want then run, and can kill a couple of the ones I don't want if there is time. You can cheese it if you want by repeatedly tapping the negotiator for a different spawn group. If you kill the negotiator then the raid spawns randomly on the map. If you negotiate with him, the spawn takes a couple of hours.
On the wall, I tend to use my bad archers to slow the raiders I want to keep further away from my skilled archers who would one shot them. I try to keep some people I don't want alive next to the ones I want so my archers have someone else to aim on.
I also keep a close eye on the auto-aims by my archers, and move all archers away from the raiders I want if they are isolated with low HP as they don't pose much threat or move fast. Anyone with above 50% will never surrender upon victory so it is good to try and tap as many as you can without killing them, then picking off the worst of them until victory, to have some choice.
If everyone has a heavy crossbow, please note that it is just impossible to keep anyone alive so low tier weapons with low archer stats work quite well for these tasks. Also I believe traps are a no no as you cannot control who triggers them.
I am currently trying to set up a bridge into my settlement with two portcullis facing one another so one can be activated from the outside. I want to try trapping them instead of tapping them, and maybe I can get Ravagers this way. By facing the second portcullis with its activation outwards, I can also ensure my fighters aren't trapped in with the raiders when they move to close the gate.
If you are not getting raids, up the difficulty level or play with the frequency of raids. I play on normal difficulty as I wanted a chill game and this generates enough raids over time. I have played on Very Difficult in a previous save but I think the number of raiders would be difficult to manage in this way, but not impossible. I get around 15 raiders each raid against about 13 settlers.
I also noticed that some groups like the Ravagers never seem to surrender no matter what I seem to do, whereas Bandits and Looters mostly seem to so perhaps start by targeting easier groups.
I have bought 3 other prisoners from the trader from neighbouring factions but didn't really get this ransom mechanism as it did not seem to move the needle. I generally gifted the prisoners with gold back to the faction but in one case I massively lost points for no obvious reason. I don't tend to fight the other factions as I want to try and be friendly with everyone.
Nah, Just entertainment.
