Well now there are previous roles that pick the stars, like jeff I like starting with settlers having two stars on blacksmith , carpenter and tailor. The only other really important ones are construction then botany imo,, both relate to minimum skill levels to do some tasks . There are particular previous roles like bowyer that gives 2* on carpentry and ranged . I forget the other roles for the other two , but you can find them . I also picked Yorkist as the other drop down on the only play through I've done since this update , as it gave a * to both melee and ranged. Some perks like green thumb give you other *'s , in that case botany, erudite or wise I think give *'s on intelligence , good to have. . Of course there are negatives associated with some roles and perks , I have particular skills with negatives I don't mind , like a negative artist, which is very late game skill and well you have to survive to get there.
All depends on how you play, I'm a systemiser so tend to use the advanced character creation for my first 3 players , I just find it two irksome to rely on random starts and new settlers to allow me to make a sharp stick in the first five years. :)
