How do you make the coldest cellar?
Do I just dig it as deep as possible? yet I read somewhere that leaving the walls, floor, and also the ceiling as natural dirt/rock tiles is best?

I've placed stone floors on the ground and ceiling in my cellar, is this somehow ruining my cellar?

Yes if its for cold storage. Leave everything dirt where possible. And to make it colder research ice and place ice inside
Thanks. Yeah, so far I've dug down to bedrock and am building a large room, it is directly below my main castle floors, but there is like 3 layers of natural stone/dirt between said cellar and anything man made.

it seems to sit at 3 degrees right now even with iceblocks in Spring. Heaps of my workers are in there though still constructing it....

Might report back after it is done

So long as you're under five degree's, you're golden.

The thing with dirt walls seems to be outdated info.
I've dug several rooms of the same size underground to experiment with and the room with dirt walls was the warmest of them all while the clay walls room was the coldest.

edit:
Has anyone got an underground room to freezing temps?
I've been trying but just can't get it cold enough to make ice.

Same here. I just got the ice maker yesterday and it's the first day of winter. After reading some tips, I made my basement two levels down. All natural walls. But no matter if I put the ice makers on ground level outside or in the basement, they keep saying it's too warm to make ice. Do I just have to wait a few days? Should I make clay walls? The temperature says "0" now

As mentioned above. I am at "0" degrees and the device still says too warm.

I've built ice boxes outside and once it was cold enough the settlers were working the tasks.
The season doesn't matter, only the actual temperature.
I'd like to make an underground ice chamber to make ice in other seasons as well, but so far 0.3°C in winter is the closest I got.

No matter how you construct the cellars, they will not go to zero degrees. You cant make ice in them anymore.

the dirt cellar seem outdated. i use double layer clay wall now
VANGUARD Dec 9, 2023 @ 6:28am
Does the double layer get it down to freezing point?

I think you do not get freezing temp even with ice cubes present in the cold storage.

I use clay walls, wooden floor and 16 ice cubes for degrees between 0.5-2.5 even in summer time (storage had 3 layer of dirt on top of it).

I'm testing with 5x11 sized rooms, one of which had a double layer of clay walls, clay brick flooring, and underground so 4+ layers of dirt above it.
As long as the floor was covered in ice blocks I could get the room temp to 0°C, but as soon as an ice box was put up it crept up to 0.1°C.
Tried it with another room with exact the same setup but instead it had three layers of clay walls and it still sits at 0.1°C.
Is this by design?

I was testing the old 3 x 7 with ice on shelves in middle.

Three levels down, all dirt with empty rooms leading into the storage area and tunnel-ways to separate them all from each other.

So far some strange temps, early days, but see how it goes.
Wish we could assign X Ice Blocks to a stockpile rather than a tick for if to allow or not.

I was using a 3 x 3 area between stairs, 3 level down, and a separate chamber with no result in temp drops when I placed the ice in the 3x3 room only

Are you playing a modded game or on an older version?
I cannot store ice blocks in shelves.

I thought they were stored in a shelf, get back to you on that and check tonight.

No mods and latest version
