Plants do not produce seeds and trees do not produce saplings
I keep running out of seeds and saplings despite the fact that according to the information in the farming zones every plant should produce at least one seed and every tree at least one sapling. So, once you begin farming the crops should be self-sustaining but they aren't.

I've even tried letting some of my crops deliberately 'Go To Seed' which should result in 10 x seeds per plant but I'm still not getting any.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I doing something really stupid?

This sounds interesting.

I've literally just purchased some barley from the nearest friendly settlement using a merchant caravan. I was going to just use it for brewing and cooking and only bought it to make up the weight for the return journey.

But if what you say is correct then its as good as seed, which is the main purpose of the caravan trip. So, this could be really good especially as I'm short of hay.

I've tried building four bee-hives (Skegs) but I'm hay-less at the moment so I haven't been able to finish them.

Cartography for trading is also something that will help with your seed problem.
I've just built a Cartography Table and you are so right. I hadn't realised how useful it is, its totally under-rated on the tutorials I've been watching.

I just sent a two man caravan to the nearest friendly village capable of carrying just over 350 Kg of goods and loaded with Herbs, Iron Ingots and Roast Meat and its heading back now with literally hundreds of seeds and saplings. Plus a Cow,, a Sheep, a Cat, and two Chicken.

Can't wait for it to arrive.. It will be like Christmas after the winter famine.

It took two settlers 24 hours to complete the trip but should be well worth it.

Now how do I stop the foxes and wolves eating my chickens again?.

Interesting, maybe they changed that, I actually didn't bother with chickens for a long time since they didn't eat hay and I saw no need to bother with animal fodder just for eggs.

Yeah, I never deal with chickens but to my knowledge your animals will not kill other animals you have. Cats are also useless in my opinion, (they run out in the wild to kill a rat and die to a wolf) dogs can at least haul when trained. I train my two goats to haul the moment I start a new game and those two just breed more constantly that are auto trained once the parents are.

As for skeps yeah, hay is needed for those, but since your caravan is bringing you back so many goodies you should manage winter fine. Once hay starts growing in spring stock up on it. (Just be sure to cover your hay up with a roof and flooring preferably in the animal pen so it doesn't decay. The animals also like sleeping under a roof, not sure that matters though.) You need it for skeps, beds, animals and probably other things I can't think of. Constantly harvest your map for goods.

Glad you're getting things working now. I know games can be frustrating at times.

Yes! I'm doing quite well at the moment.

I'm still without Hay, but I've learned my lesson and I'm sitting on my hands and not interfering in my farmers crop management. So, eventually she will harvest the ripe barley and there will be Hay. In the meantime I have one settler having to sleep on the floor, but he seems happy enough.

ALL of my domestic animals are being trained on a daily basis. Just to see what happens.
So far, nothing has. But I'm perceiving, if only because its giving my settlers experience in Animal Handling.

The idea of releasing hungry animals was a godsend and they are all wandering happily around the settlement and eating anything they come across including Flax plants. But none of them has died yet so it seems to be working.

When you animals can haul, make sure you're culling the local wolf population as they WILL kill them when hungry. That's another thing I try to watch over on my games, keep them dead. Be warned they can retaliate though and attack your settlers. I'm guilty of save scumming (resetting from last save) if I lose one to a wolf.

Hope you're watching your map too for things to harvest like herbs, barley, flax, hay, etc. It's a great way to stock up on just about everything.

You can also click on your fields and tell the settlers to only harvest when going to seed if you aren't in dire need of food as well.
