Do you need to leave gaps between rows of shelving?

I have a storeroom and have just added wooden shelving. But I've noticed items such as the longbow and books being dumped on the ground outside and wonder if perhaps I've reduced the storeroom storage capacity by building the shelves too close together,

Can anyone confirm?

Hi there. The wooden shelves only store a specific items. Foods, Seeds, Textiles, Medicines.
As for the shelves being to close together that can cause issues when they cant reach the ones being blocked.

To store the Weapons requires a weapons rack to be built. The floor model can hold i believe up to 4 units and the wall mounted one holds one.

Does this answer your question?

They can technically walk through shelves, but it creates problems with pathing and I'd avoid it if possible; try to leave a free tile for access on at least one side. There are specific bookshelves for books and weapons racks for weapons; as mentioned, those items (and most other things, in fact) cannot go on the standard shelves.

I can't make weapons racks yet. But I'll try and create another storehouse for weapons and basic materials as they seem to need to be on the floor.

Yes! I've noticed that they seem to be able to walk through the shelving, albeit slowly. I just wasn't sure if the blocked in shelves were being fully used.

If you don't have unused floor space around shelves and stockpiles sometimes items will be teleported to nearby ground. Haulers sometimes grab stuff to put on stockpiles/shelves at the same time and if there isn't enough space in the stockpile for all of them, the item/resource(s) will be dropped on the floor nearby. This can even leave items in inaccessible areas.
