sure. wait until they invent fridge and freezer in a thousand years or so.

Barley does not decay at room temperature, so you can plant a few fruit & veg to have some variety in the warm seasons, and also a whole lot of barley, and live off bread all winter.

It'd be interesting if they could do what they actually did back then and have a perpetual stew going. Maybe it could have a steward action for stirring and need to be stirred a few times a day to balance out a non expiring food. Maybe no mood buff or hit

i use honey as my main food source. it ca be stored at room temp and last for years. if you want to use more perishable food, try using terraforming with dirt walls, the build a dirt ceiling if possible, twig roofs are pretty good isulators and you can make ice blocks to cool the room further

What? I should read up here more often. Taking notes for the honey as well....

The new update makes my 'cellar' more warm in the summer so I was already reprioritising mining to get another level down in the hopes it would indeed be cooler. This gives perspective.

I dug the basement down 3 blocks and nothing happened (((
the temperature there is 2.5-3.1
I hate this update(((:steamsad:

I hope there is someone who will tell you how to make a normal new cellar (((

I'm beginning to think they want to discourage 'hoarders'. I like being a hoarder!! Having cellar after cellar with food never going bad and not being able to eat it all. Damn these more realistic settings. *deep sigh*

:D It'll make us better in the long run. Rotating the stock, cooking old stuff first. All the overplanting I do is truly a waste now, not just a sprawling food hoard I couldn't eat in a decade like my settlers are squirrels.

If boars can eat vegetable rot it'd be another use, one that mirrors our real life relationship with swine over the centuries. Might be enough to justify all the gorings it takes to get them going.
If you're looking for non perishable food raise livestock ;D Fresh whenever you need it.

I'm quite sure in real life swine are not fed vegetable rot. Leftovers yes. I'm gonna need to google this extensively now and spend my next hour or so investigating this. Ugh... :)

In China and some tribes in South America they used pigs as ehhh, latrine animals :D Maybe that's what came to mind. I worked in a restaurant growing up that would bucket our spoilage along with the plate scrapings and the pig farmer would come and take it twice a week, said they loved it. They eat carrion and feces :D They aren't put off by slimy broccoli.

I have a similar question about a cellar. I went down 2-3 blocks in limestone. The temperature there is 4.8/ 4.5. It used to be 2. So the food was not close to spoiling. Do we need now to put smth on the floor? Or create bigger caverns?
I initially thought that it's because of insufficient heat insulation due to the new paddock (?) instead of the set of two isolated staircases as before

I've played around a bit with root cellars, found a simple one that's maintaining a sub 3c temp in summer.

A simple three layers down with nothing else around, nothing above it including farms, all dug soil. 70 tiles in it's current state, nothing but beams shelves and a door.

If you can hit sub 3 your softest perishables will last for over a year, tubers for longer, and your smoked meat will last for 4.

Even if you use ice (tile <1°c) the shelves next to ice stay between 2-3°c so I don't really see the point of using ice right now. I lost the last herbs seed I had on my shelves this way.

Best bet AFAIK is like potsnflotsam said (I was typing something similar but he posted right before ...).

What you actually need is wall, floor and roof made of "ground" type material for best insulation. That include natural dirt, grass, coal, limestone, clay, iron and hand made soil (since exactly like a natural block).

If you build a roof/floor made of a layer of soil and use soil as wall your room will be really cold all the time like an underground room.
just make sure no light reach your room because it heat the tile by a lot.
