Farming Underground & Greenhouse Guide
If you didn't know already, the new update finally makes it possible to again have farms underground and food growing in low sunlight conditions while you can also create greenhouses above ground to heat them up, keep the bad weather away and settlers safe while farming even in the cold days of last two seasons.

This is possible thanks to the Grated Floors added in the Environment Effects Overhaul update. This is a guide on digging and building such rooms where you can not only grow food safe from attack and bad weather but also control the temperate with doors, windows, torches and braziers while making sure plants get enough sunlight to grow.

Fantastic! I've seen your other videos too, you do great work.

Thank you kindly! Glad you enjoyed them. I am going to try and see what happens when we combine both of these two concepts. And I still want to make that Tree Greenhouse work.

Can't wait to see it! :D

I know that everyone's gaming experience is different but why would I buy a medieval sim and try to have a greenhouse or grow underground. Might as well ask for Merlin the Wizard or throw some zombies to spice it up.

I don't think it works in winter. It is not just the temperature, it is the sunlight. In winter, even at noon, sunlight is 0%, unless I misunderstood the stats the game shows.

Why wouldn't a marauder jump a ditch? :D A ditch is more magical than a greenhouse heheh. Why would I buy a medieval sim where the enemies are so easily corralled and funneled into killzones?
Both of these things require a suspension of disbelief. They both are in the realms of gaming the system, they both require understanding of the mechanics and what's going on under the hood to exploit. One is just more obvious than the other. Some of us like to figure out exactly what's going on. In the long run, the more you understand about sunlight and heat, the less you have to grow. The less you have to grow, the more time you can spend digging ditches to keep out marauders :D

Sunlight% differs where you take the reading. You're reading sun% inside somewhere without windows most likely. Take a reading of it outside in the sun :D

Tried above ground, in a flat area except for a few trees, at 12 noon in the dead of winter. Moved my mouse across ALL cells (in case blocked by trees). All sunlight 0%. So either that is intended in the update or it is bug.

EDIT:
add on. I reloaded the save game, and some time after that point, I see sunlight again... Then after a short while, it went back to all 0. could be a bug?

The concept is actually something that has existed in real life. Look up the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno, California. Granted, it primarily was designed against the heat of California, it also keeps a stable temperature against the winter cold. It's been in use for over 90 years.
