If theres nothing in the hole you should be able to fill it from the top. Sometimes dirt or limestone falls in the hole and makes it a bit of a pain.

You can prevent item dropping in the pit while you dig by making sure there is enough space above as they dig, but it's kinda a pain to do so.
As for removing stairs while leaving nothing in the pit, manually draft your colonist side way from the stairs (next to the middle part) and force him to remove the stairs. If you let them do it from a corner materials will drop down instead.

materials and sims pop out a hole when you fill it anyway

You cannot build a tile on a space with material on it.

they probably change it so you can now.

but the thing is, there is nothing in the hole...

it is a few block deep, I filled the lowest one from underneath it, and build some ladder in it to reach the middle part, there is nothing in it, and the ladder does not reach all the way

A 1X1 shaft? Can you reach the bottom without the ladder? Like is it a cellar that caved in, that you have access to from underneath?
If that's the case I'd just plug the top and see if that alone is enough. If you want the middle spaces of the shaft filled for other things at that depth you can fill them when you come in from the side. I tried playing around with it this morning and you're right you can't fill it like this, at least from the top and I can't reach the bottom.

You can channel another ladder down next it, and alternate back and forth if you're married to filling it.

You can't build soil ontop of a space with a ladder under it so you have to remove the ladder first, and you can build from the side. Alternate this all the way up. Alot of effort and resources tho :D

potsnflotsam - I see that you have dirt in your base building menu. I don't have it in mine. Did they change it? Or do I need to research something?
