Mining tips

Anyone have any tips for mining, specifically if you can't find any gold/silver on the exposed layers of your map?
Any particular methods or places to look for that would help to find these resources?

I've been through 3 maps so far (2 mountains, 1 hillside) and have only found one node of gold ore, no silver, and it doesn't yield enough material to even be smelted.

If you're super frustrated and can't find iron, gold or whatever, go through your z levels and zoom right into the squares. Use your mining tool (without clicking it) and it'll tell you what each square is. Hover over the squares as you go deeper, if the squares have 'cracks' in them - so they aren't just solid and look plain, you have a mineral in them which means you can also see where all the veins go. If you're unsure what I mean about the texture change, just drop fully to the bottom of map where you see granite and look at that texture, should have cracks in it.

Didn't think of using the mining tool. I'd been cycling through the Z levels but noticed it didn't show what was where. Good to know you can use the mining tool to find out, thanks!

No problem! Its definitely a little cheaty and I really only use the cracks now so I can still "explore" for the gold at least.

Gold and silver are all I'm kind of worried about, but it looks like I have none on this map on any of my Z levels. Sadly. Kind of a surprise for a hillside map

I've only ever found it 3-4 levels deep on the left side of maps. Out of 6 maps now and it didn't matter mountain or valley. Just started a hill map and its 4 levels on the left under iron.

Just two or three blocks mind you. Its pretty hard to find.

Looked but haven't seen anything. This map did have a single node of gold right on the surface though,which seemed kind of lucky.
Maybe I'll find more later on in the play through. Thanks for the advice!
