As to why you'd want to increase your settlement value..... no idea.
I don't think it impacts upon the difficulty of enemy raids.

Yes, steel is the only material I make weapons & armour with.
Also fuel is always sticks. (except for steel ingot manufacture, where it has to be coal)
Tbh I'm not sure why these aren't the defaults; it's incredibly tedious to have to change these settings every time a workbench is made...
I'd been trying the scan with the mine tool since the beginning but obviously thats a lot of cubes, and realistically I'd only want to mine those near my existing excavations. So soon gave up after a 1000 squares checked.
