Where did my progress/saves go ? All back to 0 ?

Yesterday I was playing on my linux machiene and for some reason it started complaining about unable to save progress, no problem for me. Shut down the machiene. Today starting took long, but finally got a picture, but...setting up first time use! Restarted the game several times, no dice. Schut down the machiene and booted into windows. there also all progress lost!! Where did my savegames go ? And how is this reliable at all ? Steam says I've been playing for 70+hours or so, but now start from scratch ? Is it the steam cloud ? Why would it erase all my progress stored on my machiene ? That is like a backup that erases all your date just because you can't add anything new ? The old stuff should...sigh. Who can fix ? I only play single player.
Edit: The most important is the "userdata", not so much the saves themselves. I've found the cloudsaves, and besides the individual saves, there is only one user2.dat file (I guess a first time player).

Go to the Control panel \ Appearance and Personalization \ Show Hidden files and folders , a dialog box opens up put a tick in Show Hidden files , Folders or Drives \ click Apply , then close,
Go to C:\ Users \ yourname \ AppData \ Local \ Sniper Elite 5 \ PC _Profile Saves \ folder with long number < double click to open it .
here we see the game save files Slot0.sav Slot1.sav
Copy&paste Slot1.save to desktop , delete Slot0.sav , rename the Slot1,save on your desktop to Slot0.sav then put this file back in folder with long number.

@sTiGga, Thanks, there are multiple save slots, I can load them, but the main problem is that I'm playing as a new player. All progress made as a player is lost.
All settings, preferences, I think also keybindings are also lost.
I'm not sure, but I guess the player data is saved elsewhere ?
But I'm going to try out your suggestion in a minute anyway.

@sTiGga, didn't work, Ther was a message that a save was corrupted and a backup was loaded, then I could load a save, but... my skill points are zero and zero skills unlocked.

You do not make things clear at all , 1 minute you on a Linux PC / 70 hours of play , next your on a Windows PC , then you say " 'm playing as a new player "

slot1 is the profile backup
slot3-5 are campaign auto saves
slot6-29 are campaign manual saves
slot30 is a campaign quick save
