Yes, there are many unpolished elements but I’m content that it’s absorbed 1500hrs + of my time since release. I’ve never played any other game for so long (apart from SE4!!).
I’m playing invasion almost exclusively whilst trying out all sorts of personal challenges but no multiplayer and very very little survival. So just like you I’m finding it very adaptable - currently I’m trying to stick to melee or mine kills as an invader.
Frankly if SE6 arrives and it’s non WW2 I’ll be disappointed but I’ll still probably buy it!
Been playing SE games since like 2005 when SE1 was on ps2. I enjoyed the weird campaign and really liked the multiplayer, it had a very tight-knit and ridiculous community on ps2 back in those days. Not sure what happened to all the weird characters I got to know playing that game. We'd play several rounds every night then harass each other on the old gamespot/gamefaqs forums. Lots of silly internet drama but also a lot of good guys ("vets") who looked out for one another. After a few years the player count slowly dwindled and people moved on to other games like SOCOM and COD4 and we all assumed that Rebellion would abandon the game. At some point they notified everyone the servers would be shut down, but one of the vets contacted them and somehow convinced them to keep them open. At this point there were like 10 of us still playing the game, and I started to drift away myself after a while.
I couldn't believe it when years later SEV2 came out. A new SE game! Rebellion was still a viable company! It was something like 7 years between SE1 and V2 which is a ridiculously long time for a video game sequel. And V2 just...kinda sucked. It looked good but it was pretty much just running down corridors and tunnels. None of the wide open maps of the first game, and it just wasn't fun. Then just a couple years later SE3 came out which was so so good. It was the SE game we'd always hoped for, with good controls, good sniping, and big maps with lots of freedom of movement. Then SE4 came out and just knocked it out of the park.
SE5 I have some problems with, the campaign isn't as fun or challenging or interesting as SE4, but the game looks good, the controls are amazing, and by Rebellion standards it's a pretty polished game. I really love Survival mode and try to play it as much as I can--haven't played much lately, need to get back into it. Wish we could get a fun community going like we had back in the ps2 days but we're probably never going back to those days of the internet when people would actually be social.
