30XX all the way, baby.
30XX visuals are different, more akin to "Megaman Zero" series, but I recommend this one because since it's now been finally released from the beta, it feels solid enough, there's a bunch of extra ways to play the game.
BUT. Consider getting 20XX in the future, at least for understanding the story. The content is different, the bosses are different, and so on.
Just started playing 30xx, it's cool that it has multi, but feels dark
If you could only have one, I'd recommend starting with 20XX, as they're both part of the same story. Both have dozens of hours of gametime in between them.
Advantages of 20XX:
-zoomed in a bit so characters are more detailed
-All armor sets are shown on your character when you collect a part so cool "mix and match" styles
-game can be played in shorter bursts. A run lasts around 45 minutes compared to 30XX's 70.
-Flying with the machine gun
-Fully charged Quint Laser
-Home base is nicer
-Progression system unlocks more items for future runs based on buying the item after completing a run or spending the currency after dying in one
-If you have the DLC, there's four characters to play as vs. two
Advantages of 30XX:
-zoomed out so stages are easier to see and navigate
-8 unique tile stages plus unique sub-bosses for each stage compared to 20XX's 4
-Core system lets you stack weapons and armor pieces instead of replacing them in the previous game (Disadvantage, only the resonant armor shows on your char)
-Progression system seems more focused on making you "stronger" compared to the first game
-Boss fights and designs feel better
-Nina and Ace feel more different to play from each other vs. the first game.
While 30XX seems like an improvement, I did mention in a previous thread I'm pretty irritated at how apparently there's some sort of "true ending" that's based on RNG which I find pretty unacceptable. If you don't care about that, then I guess it's a moot point.
20XX is more casual. You can grab Ace or Nina and jump in and finish a run in like 30-40 minutes no problem. You jump back in to unlock more stuff because that last run the RNG was really good to you and you were seriously badass at the end or it was horrible to you and you can easily do better.
In 30XX I did 3 runs in one playthrough and got an achievement. As of right now, less than 10% of the game's owners have done this. Ask yourself this "Why aren't people playing more than one or two runs?" "Why are players netting so few achievements?" "Why isn't anyone going far enough to get 100 memoria points in a single run?" It's unfortunately quite damning to see the number of people who aren't playing 30XX after buying it. If the game had a demo, I would have played that and decided to not buy it.
30XX is also more difficult but in the worst possible way, bosses become HP sponges. In 20XX you could face tank a boss at the end if you needed to. They are tough. So are you. In 30XX you must master boss attack patterns and exploit their weaknesses because the fights take unbearably long and if you can't dodge one attack pattern you'll see it another 20 times before the fight is over.
20XX unlocked new stuff that would show up in the game. 30XX adopted the more standard "start game with +20HP" style unlocks. I don't like that at all. I see the same drops over and over in 30XX and I just accept it thinking there will eventually be some kind of vendor that shows up that I can spend points on to unlock nicer stuff. Still hasn't happened. On top of that there's no equality between a first run and a later one that you've got more energy and HP out of the box.
Ultimately, the core gameplay loop and item unlocks and boss fights of 20XX are more satisfying to me. So I recommend 20XX over 30XX.
Nothing wrong with liking 20xx over 30xx, but achievement statistics aren't a good indicator. Reviews and word of mouth (like on threads on this one) are better indicators of public opinion, and those are very positive, and most people are saying that 30xx is an improvement in most, if not every, way.
