how to hit short balls

This is a great game with a steep learning curve. I prefer hard to easy.
I am getting used to the game but i can't work out how to hit balls pitches halfway down the wicket. There are quite a lot of them. the tutorials in the game don't help.
I am using the old fashioned brian lara push button swing rather than the stick.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wish I could help. But using standard controls, you just have to hold RT to play a backfoot shot for short balls.
