and Surgeries & Exsanguinations /preservation goes for chor
Read everything, like some wiseass once said
Why would I not be able to use 'Surgeries & Exsanguinations'? It has the proper Aspect and it has a heart? Yes, I get that you could use it with Chor as well, but why not Health?
If I cannot use that skill for Health, which card do I use then ?!
I DID READ EVERYTHING, and I watched videos too. Using the discussion board was a last resort. I don't need sarcasm.
1) You need to use a Skill that has been Committed to the Tree of Wisdoms; as you've probably noticed, each Skill can go in one of two Wisdoms, and gives a specific Soul part when Committed based on the Wisdom (in this case, Surgeries & Exsanguinations can go in either Preservation, giving you a Chor, or Hushery, giving you a Wist). The Skill will then lose the Aspect of the Wisdom it wasn't Committed to, and gain both a Committed Aspect and an Aspect stating which Soul part you got from it. You will always get a base-level Soul, even if you Commit it in the 9th ring of the Tree.
2) You need 2 Soul parts of the same type at the same power (2 Health, 2 Wist+, and so on). This means that to get a Health+, you need 2 Health, and to get a Health++, you'll need 2 Health+; this means that a ++ Soul has consumed 3 regular Soul parts, and a +++ has consumed 7. Keep this in mind, because sometimes it's better to have multiple Souls that are slightly weaker than a single Soul that is strong (Gathering, for example, doesn't care about Soul strength, so you might find you're better off with 4 Health to gather from the gardens than 2 Health+ for Crafting/Mastering).
3) You need a Workstation that can accept both Soul parts and the Skill; not every Workstation can accept 2 Soul parts, but if it has any sort of Evolve Via [Wisdom] Aspect (you can check in the bottom section), it definitely can, so it's mostly about finding one of them that can accept the Skill alongside them. Depending on the Skill, this may be a challenge, but keep in mind that a Workstation just has to accept one of the Aspects on a Soul or Skill, and you'll find it easier; for example, Chor (Grail/Heart) and Surgeries & Exsanguinations (Heart/Knock) can both go into the Mirrors (Grail/Knock/Lantern/Winter).
4) You need the appropriate Evolve Via [Wisdom] Aspect included in the recipe; most Workstations that can accept 2 Souls have one by default, but it's not always the one you need. If a Workstation doesn't have the right Evolve Via [Wisdom] Aspect, there are Memories that have them that can be added to the recipe and allow you to evolve the Soul. There are at least 2 Memories per Wisdom, most of which can be Crafted, and all of them are Persistent, so you can hang on to them until you need them. Using the above example of Chor with S&E in the Mirrors with Preservation, Mirrors have Evolve Via Nyctodromy, so you'd need an Old Moment or Thunderskin's Paean to complete the evolution (both have an Evolve Via Preservation Aspect).
Hopefully that helps!
I've been doing pretty well on everything but gads I got really stuck on the step about committing the skill to the tree before you can use it for soul upgrades. That's pretty huge and for a first play-through that's painful b/c I would have been much more careful about applying skills to the tree if I had known about it before-hand.
That is seriously hurting me b/c I'm desperate for Nector and Scale but just can't seem to get a break. I am having absolutely no luck in that department. I don't know what I'm gonna do now. I'll have to figure something out.
Step 4 was another problem area for me - and this really helps to clarify it.
Ty for the clean and concise information. My brain feels slightly less scrambled now LOL.
Each Workstation has 5 slots; the top left is always a Soul, the top middle is always a Skill, and the top right is always a Memory, all of which are locked to only accept a Soul/Skill/Memory with an Aspect the Workstation has listed (for example, if it doesn't have Lantern as one of its Aspects, it can't take a Revelation Memory in the top right slot).
The bottom two slots vary from Workstation to Workstation, but many of them will be able to accept a Soul in the bottom left slot and a Memory in the bottom right slot; these are NOT locked by the Aspects of the Workstation, you can put whatever Soul/Memory you want in them (for example, you can put a Chor into the bottom left slot if the Workstation accepts a Soul there, even if it can't take Grail or Heart). Every Altar and Shrine is set up this way, so if you've unlocked any of them (Shrine: St Januarius is probably the first you'll encounter), you can look at the slots in it to see what I mean.
To evolve a Soul, you need to find a Workstation that accepts the Soul and Skill in the top row, and then add the second Soul to the bottom; if you need to use a Memory, you can always put it in the lower right slot.
You've probably already noticed this, but you can check what can go in any slot by clicking on it, and checking the window that opens in the top right; there will be up to three lines of Aspects, followed by an asterix, a check mark, or an X. If the Aspect is in the asterix line, it MUST be present for the slot to accept it; if the Aspect is in the check mark line, at least one of those Aspects must be present; and if an Aspect is in the X line, none of them can be present. Desks don't have any sort of check for Maladies like Consider does, for instance, which is why you can use Maladied Soul parts for reading in desks but not with Consider.
TY again for your precise and detailed explanation. It has really saved my sanity.
