Struggling to evolve to +2
Going to put this all behind a spoiler, but I'm trying to evolve to +2, but it's crafting instead.

I have:

Watchman Shrine (Challenges: Evolve via Illumination
2 Phost +
Glassblowing & Vesselcrafting level 4, attuned to Phost

Unfortunately, it's making the Amethyst Ampoule and not letting me evolve.

Is there something more I need to evolve, or am I just locked out because it's also a crafting recipe?

I've never seen a crafting recipe override an upgrade recipe for an Element of Soul so far. What you're missing, is that for your example to work, the skill would need to be slotted in the Illumination branch of the Wisdom Tree. You can't slot Glassblowing in Illumination, you probably have it in Ithastry. Which means that in order to evolve Phost, you need to use a workstation that can evolve based on Ithastry.

The conditions that need to be fulfilled, are:
- Two identically leveled cards of the same Element of Soul
- Skill attuned to the same Element of Soul (note that this attunement will irrevocably expire after one use)
- Workstation that can "Evolve" cards
- The skill needs to be slotted into the branch of the Wisdom tree that the workstation can evolve cards for.

Thank you - I was at the wrong shrine!

Does anyone know what determines the card and evolve power for each empty slot in the tree? For instance, I had two different cards that could go into a slot and each one was going to return a different card/power.

I think it's a hidden variable that's individual to each skill. If there is a formula to determine it, I haven't found it yet. I haven't looked too hard, though.

We do know that there's no random factor involved, the assignments stay the same across multiple playthroughs.

The slot itself doesn't matter, only the branch does. A skill will always attune to the same element of soul when slotted into the same branch of the wisdom tree, regardless of the exact position. And each branch of the Wisdom tree will always offer two different elements of soul, depending on the skill.

If you don't want to look up spoilers, then a good way to manage this, is to leave as many slots in the inner rings of the wisdom tree empty as you can. When you get a new skill, put it into one of those empty slots without assigning it. That will tell you all there is to know.

Each Skill determines its possible attunements for the Wisdoms it can be committed to, and this doesn't depend on its level. Each Wisdom admits two possible attunements, across all Skills that can be committed to it. Each Element can be an attunement at two particular Wisdoms. The graph with edges for affiliated Wisdom-Element pairs is a single circle.
