Am I missing something? Is this normal?
I'm super early on, just got into Brancrug, trying to unlock the house.

Seems I can do that by getting people to help me, but since each person can only help me once a day, it's going to take a couple of days.

Is that normal? I mean, it's not -hard-, but it just feels like really weird game design if I'm just supposed to waste a couple of days on x6 speed just so my Elements of the Soul become usable again.

Feels like I'm missing some important mechanic or something.

Or is the problem simply that I'm always paused unless I'm actively waiting for a countdown to end, and I'm "supposed to" just be letting time pass in the background while I read stuff?

Over time, you'll gain more elements of the soul which will let you hire more people. You can't have two of the same person helping you at the same time, but you can get someone's help, use it, and then rehire them before the day is up. Also, assistants can be buffed for the day using soul elements, memories and food/drink.

Study your journal after drying it, and you will gain some initial lessons which can be used to obtain skills and more soul cards. The more soul cards you have, the more actions you can perform per day.

Something else that wasn't mentioned is you can recover your soul parts by resting. If you start an action at the bar with the fatigued soul, then add money, it'll cost 2 pence to restore the soul piece and take 1 minute. Once you get in the house you can camp in a bed to declare your room then when you add a fatigued soul card and a drink it'll recover in 1 minute 30 seconds.

This game is a slow and methodical one. You're a librarian, take your time, actually read what the books have to say, take notes. The house isn't going anywhere, it is perfectly fine if you only accomplish one thing in a day. Soon you can get more soul cards so you have more "actions" per day.

Thanks all, things opened up quicker than I expected the next day.

After Cultist Simulator, where you always have something to do, it just felt weird/wrong having to wait out a whole day doing nothing.

One of the big changes from Cult Sim to get used to is that in BoH you aren’t fighting for survival against a ticking clock.

I'll try to keep that in mind, thanks.
