BTW a commonly missed feature: you can rise the aspects of a person you hire by speaking to them again, and you can do it multiple times with a single person, but you'll have to provide a different type of resources each time. The cheapest and the most easily available resources are your soul pieces and weather (though any memory can do). Check the list in the "Talk" spot when you talk to your assistant.
From least to most expensive, there's 1 assistant you get for free depending on your background, 3 others that are always available in their home in the village, then in the pub you get 4 seasonal workers and a rotating cast of high-aspect assistants that are available year round.
But when you're a little ways into the game money stops mattering altogether.
Slot in money AND a soul element to get the higher aspect workers. It won't consume the money, you pay them through the Talk verb after you get them.
Using that with the items you find around the house, those you craft, the luck of weather (only important in the very early game really) you can unlock everything you need without needing the rare guests that start with +4 stats.
Mind you, the stipend is very generous and can't be spent on anything else (except a meal at the pub, which is so cheap it may as well be free) so there's not too much point in saving your money, but in the very early game you might feel the pinch a little.
And as others have already said, don't get hung up if you don't get the assistant you want. You can get through the entire game without ever hiring a +4 assistant - they are useful, but absolutely not required. You can get the regular assistants to values like (say) 24 Knock via crafting, and there are no exploration challenges in the game that require values higher than 16. You probably won't be able to max out everything during mid-game, but you have a lot of wiggle room.
