is it worth visiting the moors and beachcombing?
I have tried doing these things and have onbly found useless junk suck as sand, granite, driftwood and bones. They all have way too few and too weak influences to really be used for anything. So is it worth the time and energy to explore those places?

the parcels can come in handy but they are a chore to unwrap

There's a few beasts you can get early that way. Not sure if there's any that are exclusive to those activities but it was nice having a Living Relic an hour into the game.

While the moor and the beach give you lots of items that you won't need, occasionally they produce some useful stuff, like containers with resources that are hard to come by in the early game. And items you don't need can be turned into Salt or Sound within just 10 seconds. I use this all the time when upgrading skills with a Heart, Knock, Moon, or Moth aspect.

I pretty much ignored them until most of the house was explored. Getting Wood blanks from the Moors was important for some crafting and same with some Sand (has the Glass tag). If you bother with the animals at all, though, eventually you'll need to beachcomb and scavenge for Eggs and Mackerels to feed them as the pantry will run out of food eventually.

In addition to what others have said, the "useless junk" is less useless later on. Scholar-tier crafts require broad categories of items like "wood" or "glass" and that "useless junk" is probably the easiest way to get most of it once you've used up what you find in the library itself.

So maybe it's not useful right this moment for you, but it will be in the future and it can't hurt to have a small stockpile while you look for the more interesting things like pets and packages.

Only a small stockpile, though. Feel free to burn or chuck things if you get a ton of them.

What is Salt and Sound?

Sensory memories. For example, if you Consider a drink it will give you a Taste memory. You can get Salt from throwing something into the ocean.

Full list

Scent 1 Nectar
Sight 1 Lantern
Taste 1 Grail
Touch 1 Forge
Sound 1 Heart

Salt is one of the best memories to grab quickly in a pinch, I throw something into the sea everyday! :D

Yes, it is worth it. I believe the packages are the only way to get a yellowed newspaper, which is incredibly useful to be able to consider.

The cat and dog are also both reasonably useful to have.

Oh, true! Mind, there's packages and boxes in the house too that draw from the same pool but that's indeed another good reason.

There's a dog in the house too but no sense in not getting it early.

On the whole I think that if you're not doing much else that day and you have some cards left over while dusk is almost there, you lose nothing by beachcombing/walking the moors. Nothing bad can happen so might as well. File it under "not a priority but can't hurt."

Moors can also give you Yew wood and other Nectar ingredients.

Yep. Though I actually expected those to be two different dogs. When I found the dog in the house, I was pretty surprised that the dog whom I had saved from the woods a while ago, vanished.

It vanished? Really? When I had two vipers, they both stuck around until I released one into the ocean.

My first dog is definitely gone, and I'm 100% sure that I did not misplace it, release it, or just don't see it due to the "objects not being displayed at high zoom levels" issue. It's not in the "overspill" area in the front of the house either.

I am also fairly sure that this happened at the time when I discovered my second dog (the one that spawns in the house), though it's possible that it vanished slightly earlier (without me noticing because I wasn't using it), and of course it could also be a coincidence. But basically I knew the place where I had "stored" my first dog, saw it lying around there whenever I scrolled across that area (due to the high contrast between the brown dog and the bright background of the big altar room), but never touched it since I saw no reason to use it anywhere. And when I found the second dog and looked around where in the vicinity I could place it, I noticed that the first one was gone.

There's of course also a chance that I'm encountering a bug, which may or may not happen to other people.
