I've taken to just having the first half of a season be book-reading-time and the latter half be for everything else.
That way, I'm not generating new Lessons that might poof before I can use them. Usually.
Then, at the start of the next season (if it isn't Numa), I focus on reading new books for the first few days, to generate a bunch of new lessons that I'll then use up before that season ends.
All that said, losing lessons to Numa apparently isn't as bad as it seems because there are (reportedly, I haven't done it myself yet) ways to get a theoretically infinite number of lessons, though it sounds like it would take a long time to generate large numbers of additional lessons.
Regarding Numa "sneaking up on you", as far as I understand, Numa will happen exactly once every two in-game years, inserted between two regular seasons at a random time. This means if you see Numa before all 8 regular seasons of that cycle have passed, you should then be "safe" for the remaining duration of that 2-year period.
So Numa cant happen mid season?
Numa has never appeared mid-season for me, and I've never heard of another player to whom this happened either. The general consensus (which matches my personal gameplay experience) is that the game basically has a deck of 8 cards, 7 of which saying "no Numa" and one saying "Numa happening" - and that it draws one at the start of every regular season during an in-game 2-year cycle.
Obviously, you could have discovered something rare that no one else has seen or reported yet. Or you could have run into a bug. But since your report is in stark contradiction to established community knowledge, and since it's something that _would_ be very easy to spot if it indeed happens, I would have expected more people to come forward with this already, so please forgive my skepticism. Let's keep an eye on the matter. If I ever encounter Numa mid-season, I promise I'll come back to eat my words. ;)
