Upgrading souls is a trap
It took me way too long to realize this but pretty much anything significant you do in this game requires a soul aspect. I've yet to see anything gated by having a specific soul level, so as long as you can make it up in other ways. Upgrading a soul gets you a small upgrade in exchange you can take one less action every day..

This is important as not every soul can go into every workstation and so if you upgrade your Phost, for example, you might not be able to make as many musical compositions as you did before.

Basically, I don't think you should upgrade souls unless library progress depends on it.

How far are you? Considering every slot on the Tree of Wisdom seems to give you an Element of the Soul, and considering that Collaboration is a very convenient way to upgrade Assistants, I've been upgrading the hell out of 'em and still have too many to use.

The 'small upgrade' is pretty important. And being able to upgrade souls at all isn't that common anyway. Souls for actions doesn't usually feel like the limiting factor for me.

I just wish some of hte assistants you can find would have certain usefulness for tasks as well. Like a Musician might be useful in place of a music-memory.

You can recharge fatigued aspects at the inn in town. Pop the Fatigued aspect in and pay tuppence for a meal and a break.

It's true that if you want to make multiple things in the same category in a single day, then having one of any given Soul Aspect is going to cause issues, but upgraded Soul Aspects are important for crafting and collaboration.

I've got 45 skills and level 2 minimum on every area in the tree. I'm trying to upgrade my skills and I'm constantly running out of souls.

Use soul to make memory > use memory to make another memory > use a third soul to get the original memory back > use both memories together plus other memories to upgrade a skill etc.

Simplified verison of what I'm doing. You really need a lot of souls to get skill 7+ upgrades.

Is this instant? Because I've been doing that on the bed with beverages (which also take souls to make) and it takes 90 seconds which is a long time to wait.

You really need to be updating the tree more. You're noticing you need the soul aspects, and you're going to need upgraded skills for crafting, and upgraded soul aspects for unlocking rooms. Not sure why you're not just doing that.

I was doing that when I suddenly realized it made upgrading skills very hard because I didn't have enough souls to get memories for all the understanding slots in the skill upgrade contemplation.

You need upgraded skills to get more souls and you need souls to upgrade skills.

What you don't need at any point are upgraded souls. You get an upgraded skill and pop out a scholar tier item and then use that to collaborate along with a basic soul.

it takes 60 seconds and require you to put the fatigued soulcard into the inn, then continue and add twopence or more into the open card slot (if you put more, you get back the leftover remaining amount), and voila, 60 seconds later and you have a fresh card.
Once you have that going and make your own beverages, you can have a fresh card every, oh 30-60 seconds depending on when you start and if you keep up re-resting fatigued cards, etc.

Well -> water pitcher -> pour -> sleep with drink
Also helps the soul train.

I do think you want 1 upgraded soul of each type.

So I was able to unlock the whole library by just using basic level souls and the high level stuff the game gives you. I can also crack most 12-14 level books with just using lessons to upgrade themselves. Now I haven't unlocked all the recipes yet(I'm missing one high level ink), but I'm pretty sure you can also read all books with just basic soul cards, skills, memories, and high level inks(without using the second chance mechanic).

Well, stuff lying around the House will run out before long, and making more will require Soul anyways, so...

Really each approach has pros and cons. I find upgrading souls makes it a lot cheaper material-wise to unlock more of the House. Makes long-term progress more reliable too, Meanwhile during early game you can rope in your NPC buddy and spam talk for memories to upgrade.

It's your choice and your balance. Do you want more actions per day or a SLIGHT increase in quality? Considering soul cards are used in a lot of stuff, that increase in quality could be the difference between crafting something high-level and cracking a difficult book... or not. It is not necessary, but I advise you don't do it constantly. I decided to not upgrade them any further than level 3 (I don't even know if you can, but it might be possible)

To unlock the hardest rooms, you need to be able to squeeze every bit of Aspect into your assistant you can find within the limitations of the assistant-boosting mechanic. That includes evolving Soul Aspects. You can do for a while without evolving, but eventually you'll want to evolve at least one of each aspect to + (or find other ways to work around the problem of always being one aspect strength short of being able to explore a room). That said, I don't think it's practical (maybe not even possible) to have a ++ version of every aspect.

Also, I don't think +++ is possible: it takes 8 attunements that all need to match the limited options for attunement. From what I've been able to gather, there's no guaranteed coverage for every attunement option between the attunement workbenches. It might be possible with Phost and Horomachy and maybe Mettle and Illumination, but I kinda doubt it.

I have a +++Phost so I can answer that question. Struggling to unlock the last few rooms though. I'm only now starting to learn crafting formulas

Honestly I've restarted twice and the third time I took this approach and could not be happier. Even when you have 6x speed (which resets to 1x for no explicable reason at the beginning of the day) the game takes forever and gives you a tiny number of actions. If you rely on the inn to recharge you'll just be spending more souls on the inn to make money since it's 2 pence per recharge and pays 6 when you spend a soul making you 4 pence profit and, more importantly, using up 2 of your precious daily actions. Having the ability to do more things at once dramatically speeds the game up to the point where it is not only bearable but enjoyable. If you don't have linear throughput you can still have broad throughput and parallelization and either way you get a lot done with each day. This is fantastic advice and I think more people need to hear it. The game started being fun when I stopped upgrading souls.
