Stuck early game without enough principles to advance

I have read 1 book, opened 3 rooms, and now I have a pile of books and rooms that require 4-8 principles, but only enough soul, objects etc. to add up to 2-3.

I know that I can talk to assistants and upgrade their principle, but the soul cards that I do have are the wrong ones for the books and rooms that I need to access.

Am I supposed to grind random memories? Wait for the pub to have a relevant assistant that I can hire? Wait for events to roll me a useful visitor?

Assistants can create memories (talk to them), and memories also get created from environment, even fairly strong ones (3-4).

Memory + assistant base should be enough to progress rooms that need 4 (you only need one aspect high enough).

There are tools and consumables in the rooms you can give to assistants for another +1/+2.

Lock skills into tree of wisdom and get other souls to progress too, memory+soul+base (assistant or skill) should get you to 6.

Thanks, I didn't realise I could simply talk to Denzil over and over again, or upgrade assistants in ways other than soul cards.
