Put in your journal in the first slot, then it'll open up for you to put skills in the slots

From books around the House. Once you Consider a book you've catalogued (it'll have a title) you'll have to match it's Challenge aspect with stuff around the house, in your inventory, and the weather. Sky books are easy to crack starting out because a lot of weather has Sky and so does some furniture. As you get more skills, you'll get more aspects to throw around to open more books and access more of the House.

I don't really understand how the stuff around the house works. I'm trying to study a book that has the Moon aspect, but it will only accept objects with Lantern aspect?

Does anyone understand how to actually add a skill to the journal? Even when i fill all the slots it says i need some kind of ink, but there doesn't see to be a spot for it

Gonna break this down:

When you click on a book, it will have its MYSTERY aspect, usually second, an eye in circles. click on this to see what it asks for. You'll need to Consider the book with this much to crack it open and get the Skill.

You don't need all the aspect to start the challenge, though. YOu'll have three opportunities to add more - more from your soul cards (your stats, like trist or mettle), or from memories, or from skills, or even from furniture. These opportunities change each attempt. Sky is among the easiest, other aspects might be more challenging depending on what you start with. Try waiting for the right weather. Moon is a challenge in my run, because I can only find it in single items.

I've got a bunch of skills on my hotbar, but I feel like I'm supposed to commit them to the journal somehow so the journal can use them in the tree of wisdoms somehow, am I just completely wrong?

Lesson Learned is what your committing, and you get two benefits from it, the skill to keep around for aspects and the soul card. Memories are temporary, skills and soul are eternal.

Okay, here's my understanding:

Books reward lessons IF you match their challenge rating with enough aspect. You need to read a book with lantern 6, you need to put stuff in the consider verb (soul, memory, skill) to get up there. You put phost (lantern 2 sky 1) sunny (2 lantern 2 sky) and a level 1 skill of auroral contemplations (2 lantern, 1 edge) and you have enough. Once read, the book will provide lessons and possibly also memories.

Note that your journal is ALSO a book, with a challenge rating of 1 that you usually already have a soul bit to use on. That will get you your first skills. TRY NOT to use those lessons like other memories as they are persistent and NEEDED to upgrade skills.

Next: consider the lesson. First level needs only a single lesson to get the skill. Once that is done, you have the skill. To upgrade the skill, consider them with a soul part at LEAST one lesson sharing one aspect of the skill (does not need to be identical) and enough other memories fitting the skill's aspects to upgrade it.

And finally, once you have skills, you go in the tree of wisdom and put them in a slot fitting of their options (they can't go everywhere, usually you have two options) AND it needs to have at least a level matching the slot (first ones are easy). Special hint: Note that this commits the skill to that, so if you plan to upgrade it quickly, do wait if you are aiming at a higher slot, but your first two should go in first-level slots. And before you hit assign, it will tell you what soul bit it will give you, so double-check that is what you want. And finally... too much aspect needed for a book? Some desks let you study the book. You are looking for something that lets you put in "papers" and it can allow you to put extra tools and such in there.

I still don't know how to use two skills that got you the same soul bit to upgrade a soul bit. If someone could advise for that, I am ready to do it.

I think you need specific workstations to upgrade skills. However, keep in mind that one Season will erase Lesson Learneds, so the best time to crack new books is immediately AFTER that.

No, I see that. But, for example, right now I'm looking at one that says Mystery: Moth, but it...won't let me put in the aspects of my soul that actually contain Moth.

Nevermind, I figured it out. I was using a desk rather than Consider.

Then I failed a check and it ate one of my soul aspect cards. Awesome.
