When you click on a book, it will have its MYSTERY aspect, usually second, an eye in circles. click on this to see what it asks for. You'll need to Consider the book with this much to crack it open and get the Skill.
You don't need all the aspect to start the challenge, though. YOu'll have three opportunities to add more - more from your soul cards (your stats, like trist or mettle), or from memories, or from skills, or even from furniture. These opportunities change each attempt. Sky is among the easiest, other aspects might be more challenging depending on what you start with. Try waiting for the right weather. Moon is a challenge in my run, because I can only find it in single items.
Lesson Learned is what your committing, and you get two benefits from it, the skill to keep around for aspects and the soul card. Memories are temporary, skills and soul are eternal.
Books reward lessons IF you match their challenge rating with enough aspect. You need to read a book with lantern 6, you need to put stuff in the consider verb (soul, memory, skill) to get up there. You put phost (lantern 2 sky 1) sunny (2 lantern 2 sky) and a level 1 skill of auroral contemplations (2 lantern, 1 edge) and you have enough. Once read, the book will provide lessons and possibly also memories.
Note that your journal is ALSO a book, with a challenge rating of 1 that you usually already have a soul bit to use on. That will get you your first skills. TRY NOT to use those lessons like other memories as they are persistent and NEEDED to upgrade skills.
Next: consider the lesson. First level needs only a single lesson to get the skill. Once that is done, you have the skill. To upgrade the skill, consider them with a soul part at LEAST one lesson sharing one aspect of the skill (does not need to be identical) and enough other memories fitting the skill's aspects to upgrade it.
And finally, once you have skills, you go in the tree of wisdom and put them in a slot fitting of their options (they can't go everywhere, usually you have two options) AND it needs to have at least a level matching the slot (first ones are easy). Special hint: Note that this commits the skill to that, so if you plan to upgrade it quickly, do wait if you are aiming at a higher slot, but your first two should go in first-level slots. And before you hit assign, it will tell you what soul bit it will give you, so double-check that is what you want. And finally... too much aspect needed for a book? Some desks let you study the book. You are looking for something that lets you put in "papers" and it can allow you to put extra tools and such in there.
I still don't know how to use two skills that got you the same soul bit to upgrade a soul bit. If someone could advise for that, I am ready to do it.
I think you need specific workstations to upgrade skills. However, keep in mind that one Season will erase Lesson Learneds, so the best time to crack new books is immediately AFTER that.
Then I failed a check and it ate one of my soul aspect cards. Awesome.
