If I were going to compare The Alliance Alive to any existing games, I'd compare it to the earlier Suikoden games. In fact the scenario director for this game and the early Suikoden games is the same person so you'll get an overall similar feel even if there is a lot different. What you have here is a system of recruiting allies to your cause and then you get rewards based on how strong your guilds become because the more people they have to help out, the more perks they can give you. Your party themselves grow more powerful based on three things: equipment, awakenings, and talent points. It's not a traditional system where you battle monsters, gain XP, and level up. Your level ups come from gaining access to better gear, better skills and more HP/SP which comes from using characters in battle and exploring the world along with progressing the story.
Overall, The Alliance Alive is a great game. I liked it better than the original Bravely Default which I couldn't even finish. It's got some great old school charm and while it has faults, it's overall a lovely hidden gem. Though the PC port is not as good as it could be, the PS4 version is definitely a much better quality remaster and port of the original DS version.
This game does crash alot and save at inns only is a fker due to crashes, time lost. But the talent trees and such seems likle bravely defult 2. level up jobs but in this case weapons and magic.
Though even though I own two spells cant seen to figure out how to cast them. I also wish i could find a talent tree for all weapons and such. oh well, Thanks for your input. I did beat Bd2 and chose this game as my next backlog game at random.
I do think its got a better story and seems a little harder. bd2 was to easy even on hard. few combat comanda all die in one or 2 rounds.
As far as the spells go it depends on the type. If you are trying to use sorcery with Vivian or Ignace, you go over to the right or left to change weapon type until you get to their spells. If it's signimancy with Azura or Gene (or others since any human with the right weapon can use this) then they have to be equipped with a weapon that allows for it (typically staff) indicated by a yellow + on the weapon and then the spells are at the bottom of the list under the weapon arts. Any character that has sigils you want to be sure is equipped with a weapon that has one at all times, even if it's not the weapon you use primarily for attacking.
And yeah, the game can be a bit harder because healing is much more limited. The initial healing sigils suck. To use items you have to equip a pack for them and money is very tight in general so you can't always gear everyone up well. You do get a decent amount of gear from enemy drops though.
