King's Bounty is just like Heroes of Might and Magic, if you ever played that. There should be demos and videos available to get an idea of gameplay. Personally, I like the Disciples series better than King's Bounty (or HoMM) for aesthetic reasons like darker themes, art style and music.

Kings Bounty is campaign driven, and you have just your main hero. It's got a well developed story though (if you like colourful and comical themes).

Disciples has a campaign, but also has skirmish maps. Skirmish play lets you recruit more leaders.

And like Scott said above, KB is more like HoMM in its core mechanics. (In fact, the very first Kings Bounty is the predecessor to the HoMM franchise). It uses an attrition based system - where each unit model is actually made up of many. When one dies, it is gone. You can't bring it back but you can recruit replacements which is governed by time: Recruitment centres provide X units per week, which you can hire. In Disciples, each unit is one unit. They can lose health and be healed back up. If they die, they can be resurrected. Lose the whole party though, and they are all gone. Units being hired isn't limited by time, but instead by your wealth. These two systems are fundamentally different in how it impacts your playstyle strategy.

I prefer Disciples myself. But KB has done well too. I'd recommend wathcing some You Tube playthroughs to get a feel.

Or you could try HOMM: Shades of Darkness, if you prefer that style of TBS.

King's Bounty uses the HoMM 5 engine. However, it is more of an RPG, and rather light-hearted at that, while the Disciples series is fairly gothic. As such, they are objectively different in style and pick the style you're more in the mood for.

With that said, both game series are pretty good, so I doubt you'll be disappointed either way, if it's the kind of game you're interested in.

(In King's Bounty: Legend, you have the official position of the king's treasure seeker. Since adventurers tend to pick up massive amounts of coin, you're the king's official treasure collecting adventurer. :) )
