I've found the following post by User Talugra on MCindusMODS Patreon page that solves the crash, when starting the modded game on Steam Deck:

Talugra:

I got my Steam Deck recently. I just installed FF8 Remastered via Steam on the deck and then copied over my previously modded game folder (about 20 GB with Demastered, Upscaled FMVs, Angelwing Ultima, BattlefieldPack, HorizonPack) from my Desktop PC to the Steam Deck. You could basically replace the whole game folder or keep the vanilla files as backup. Backup is probably not really necessary though, since the "vanilla" steam installation size is less than 3 GB. So you can always reinstall it quite fast anyway.

You will have to add the following launch command as well:
export WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b"; %command%

I made 2 photos of the unmodded and modded version on the Steam Deck:

It's worth noting that the game has one issue. If you use the sleep mode on the deck while the game is running, after wake up it will crash if you open the menu. So it's necessary to avoid the sleep mode. That is not an issue caused by any mods though. The issue is being tracked, so maybe the Proton guys can fix it in the future:

I copied my modded gamefolder (newest demaster version plus pretty much all of mcindus mods) and added the launch command and it works now without a hassle!

Thank You! I had gotten the mods working on PC and copied them over using Warpinator thinking it would work (since it had for other games) but no matter what I did, the Deck would not launch the game with the Mods. Adding your command fixed it immediately. If I had stumbled on this a bit sooner it would have saved me a few hours of headache lol

Big thank you! I love being able to play this game with all the awesome mods the community has put out. Looks like a true remaster. Even got the Crystal gameplay mod working! Cheers.

This worked like a charm and ended up being easier to set up than 7th Heaven. Thanks for this post!

I used the ones in this post for discs 1 thru 3, then a post on the second page for the final disc. Pretty good upscales imo.

This fixed my issue completely. I was baffled. Thanks so much for posting this here!

I have basically the same thing going, Demastered plus all the McIndus mods on my Steam deck, but I get occasional stuttering on the Deck that I don't on my PC (with an identical copied install folder). Does anyone else see this or know a fix?

Even after typing the command I still have the same error code 🥲
jennopedernal Aug 24, 2024 @ 10:33am
With this copy and replace method from PC, I'm getting error: 3889861889 : 337 can't open configuration file : "config.txt" when launching the game.

On the other hand, if I install the mods directly within Steam Deck, only AngelWing works but none of the other texture mods.

Any thoughts?

Dang, I wonder if the method still works or something broke it along the way? Sorry don't have it on my deck anymore to test.

Maybe try a few less mods and see if that works? Possible just one breaks the entire thing.
